Program / Department Details :
Nav-CARE is a free volunteer navigation program that supports people with declining health to live as well and independently in the community for as long as possible. Specially trained Nav-CARE volunteers help clients to access resources and services in their community, while providing companionship and emotional support.
Assignment Summary :
Nav-CARE volunteers will typically have 1-2 clients who they will visit in the client's home once every 2-3 weeks. The timing and frequency of visits is at the discretion of the client and the volunteer.
Nav-CARE volunteers can assist with many things including :
identifying resources and services available in the community that may be helpful to the Nav-CARE client
assisting the client to re-engage in activities and hobbies that are meaningful to them
listening and providing support
offering one-on-one relationships tailored to the needs of the client
helping to relieve feelings of isolation and loneliness
Qualifications and Attributes :
Nav-CARE volunteers must be a minimum of 19 years of age. Volunteer attributes specific to this role include :
Excellent communication skills including the ability to listen actively
Empathy and compassion
The ability to establish meaningful and trusting relationships
Strong connections to the community
Time Commitment : One day every 2-3 weeks for 2-3 hours.
Application process :
To become a Nav-CARE volunteer, an application with references, a certificate of conduct and a health screening is required. Orientation to Newfoundland Labrador Health Services as well as Nav-CARE specific orientation will be arranged by the Nav-CARE coordinator.
