Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the seasonal position of Beach Captain – HRM Beaches.

The Beach Captain is responsible for creating a secure and enjoyable environment for all users. This role prioritizes proactive supervision, hazard prevention, and rapid emergency response. As the head of the beach team, the Beach Captain enforces safety standards, mentors staff and educates patrons on water safety. They ensure accurate reporting, maintain equipment readiness, and lead by example to deliver a safe, inclusive, and well-managed beach environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee lifeguard and instructor performance, ensuring compliance with safety standards and timely task completion.
- Ensure waterfront safety through active supervision, hazard prevention, and emergency response.
- Educate patrons on water safety and teach swimming lessons and aquatic programs, including the development and delivery of a beach project.
- Maintain equipment, complete safety checks, and ensure accurate reporting and documentation (hourly population statistics, water gauge reporting, updating signage).
- Support individuals with disabilities by adapting activities and providing necessary care.
- Uphold personal fitness, certifications, and participate in ongoing training.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:- Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard – Pool Option
- Current Intermediate Workplace First Aid, CPR–C & AED from a CSA-recognized organization
- Current Lifesaving Society Airway Management
- Current Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor or YMCA Instructor Certification (or willingness to obtain before contract start)
- Previous experience supporting individuals with disabilities
- Waterfront lifeguard experience is an asset
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:A physical screening is part of the application process and includes:- 400-meter timed swim
- 50-meter swim and carry
Conditions of Employment:- Successful completion of training requirements
- Successful completion/recertification of National Lifeguard – Waterfront Option
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job-specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Seasonal – July 1st, 2026 (Mandatory training camp mid-June – date will be outlined in offer letter) to August 31 or September 2, depending on location and weather conditions.
HOURS OF WORK: Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.
SALARY: Non Union; $20.75 (as Beach Captain) (plus 4% vacation pay)
Any shifts picked up as Lifeguard will be $19.75 (plus 4% vacation pay)
