POSITION SUMMARY :
As one of Canada's most comprehensive driver rehabilitation programs SE Health’s Driver Assessment and Training provides functional driving assessments and driver rehabilitation services for people with disabilities and medical conditions.
The driving instructor will provide support to the occupational therapist (OT) during the on-road driving assessments and will implement the OT treatment plans through on-road driver rehab training for clients with physical, cognitive and psychological disabilities under the supervision of the Occupational Therapist.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Assist Occupational Therapists to conduct in car assessments and driving instruction
- Provide a vehicle equipped with an instructor’s brake and appropriate auto insurance
- Deliver effective driver rehab training as per the occupational therapy treatment plan to clients with disabilities.
- Provide, prepare, inspect and maintain your instructor vehicle and the adaptive equipment as per the manufacturer’s requirements
- Adhere to vehicle and adaptive equipment inspection and maintenance schedules as per the manufacturer’s manual.
- Assist clients in navigating the MTO licensing process
- Document (through written notes) every assessment and training session as per SE Health documentation policies
- Communicate regularly with the Occupational Therapist regarding clients participating in driver rehab sessions.
- Effectively respond to client needs and concerns
- Liaise regularly and effectively with team members
- Participate in all regular staff education and training as required by SE Health
REQUIREMENTS :
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as an in-vehicle instructor
- Able to provide an insured training vehicle with dual brake system and basic adaptive driving equipment (hand controls, left foot accelerator and spinner knob).
- Must maintain a valid certificate for business General Liability Insurance with a minimum of $2 000 000.00.
- Maintain active membership with the Association of Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED)
- Participate in and maintain an up-to-date record of a minimum of 8 hours of continuing education in driver rehab every 2 years, as per the MTO Functional Assessment Centre Manual.
- Experience with senior drivers, MTO medical driving assessments and new drivers with learning disabilities is strongly desired.
- Experience with modified vehicles and adaptive driving equipment is preferred
- A valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License with an excellent driving record
- Highly organized and motivated individual with exceptional problem-solving skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to develop rapport with clients is a must.
- Ability and flexibility to work in a fast paced environment
- Understanding of the learning needs of the elderly and clients with disabilities
- OTA, PTA, rehabilitation service worker or adult education background is an asset
