We are looking for an Asset Manager to join our commercial Asset Management team at Emera Energy. Reporting to the Vice President, Commercial Operations you will joina team of three Asset Managers at our Halifax location.

Emera Energy’s Asset Management team is responsible for the commercial management and performance of 3.5GW’s of electric generation predominantly located in NYISO, ISONE and IESO.

As an Asset Manager your commercial responsibilities will include the development and execution of dispatch strategies, fuel purchasing decisions, facilitating hedging opportunities, and overall responsibility for the strategic objectives of our Asset Owners.

Key Elements of the role include :

  • The commercial management of merchant power assets in the Northeastern US / Canadian energy, ancillary and capacity markets, providing an exceptional level of customer service to generation asset owners and associated stakeholders;
  • Maintain a superior understanding of the northeast power and gas markets with an emphasis on the commercial operation of assets under management, the market rules and associated commercial implications;
  • Ensuring that Emera Energy’s contractual obligations are fulfilled, that all commercial activities function within the framework of governing documents and are compliant with market rules, business practices and relevant regulatory obligations;
  • Developing and implementing commercial strategies to manage risk and maximize earnings for assets and Emera Energy;
  • Liaise with asset stakeholders, traders, plant personnel and the relevant system operators to ensure successful operation and execution of the strategies;
  • Assessing market fundamentals and indicators in the near, medium and long term to support strategic recommendations for facilities undermanagement.
  • Identify and facilitate the use of financial products to capitalize on commercial opportunities and manage risk within Emera Energy’s portfolio;
  • Represent the asset’s interests through stakeholder engagements and communications with System Operators and relevant governing entities;
  • Prepare market-based reports, reconciliations and analysis associated with generating assets;
  • Supporting a variety of projects with an emphasis on market research, data collection and analysis related to northeast power markets;
  • As a key member of a dynamic team, you will be expected to work flexibly providing coverage along with other team members outside of regular working hours.

  • You possess an undergraduate degree in a Business-related field with a minimum of 5+ years’ experience in the energy markets;
  • Have strong communication skills, exceptional analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail for problem solving and independent decision making in a fast-paced environment;
  • Must be an entrepreneurial thinker who is dynamic and adaptable to change that can work independently but can also demonstrate strong relationship and team skills;
  • Have superior computer skills with an emphasis on the utilization of Microsoft Excel to create and analyze detailed spreadsheets;
  • The ability to develop code in a variety of languages such as VBA, .NET, JavaScript, etc. is considered a definite asset.
