Salary :

Classification 13, $52,868.90 - $54,504.02 annually as per BCGEU Support Collective Agreement. Annual vacation (119 hours) is pro-rated, and front loaded.

We offer competitive extended health and dental benefits (eligible after 6 months of work), as well as time off for family illness, personal illness, and other special leaves.

Closure during the Christmas Break (Dec 25 - Jan 1) of each year is paid time off. Enrolment in the Municipal Pension Plan is mandatory for all regular, full-time staff with contributions matched by the Employer.

Description :

As the Indigenous Cultural Assistant, you will offer a culturally responsive, holistic, and respectful approach to services to support Indigenous student success.

Working closely with the Indigenous Student Services Manager and the Indigenous Student Navigators to support both Indigenization and reconciliation learning opportunities with non-Indigenous students and staff.

You will be responsible for coordinating and planning cultural events and activities, with the expectation of connecting with our local Elders, reaching out to various community stakeholders, and arranging for appropriate Nation performers and Elders to provide cultural ceremonies and entertainment for events.

The Indigenous Cultural Assistant will lead the cultural connections, resulting in increased engagement with our Indigenous students, ensuring that the students are supported and encouraged for their success and wellness.

You will engage students through cultural teachings and contextual Indigenous learning during weekly sessions through story, oral history, demonstration, and experiential learning.

Expected working hours will be between 8 : 30am - 4 : 30pm in order to be available to our students. There will be a need to be flexible as the hours may vary, depending on if we have an event occurring in the evening.

This position will support both the Fort St John and Dawson Creek campuses, and can be based on either campus location, and travel within the region will be expected on a weekly basis.

Qualifications :

I n order to be considered for this position, you will have successfully completed grade 12. Two years of relevant post-secondary education with an additional 3 - 5 years of relevant experience working with Indigenous students, communities, and Elders is required however a combination of education and experience may be considered.

You will be required to have demonstrated experience and cultural training to lead and support traditional and contemporary Indigenous art and activities.

These will include teaching and a guiding knowledge of Indigenous art, song, dance, and storytelling.

The successful candidate will have excellent and respectful communication and interpersonal skills with an intercultural understanding of non-verbal communication to manage and respond strategically for event planning and management.

You must be able to understand and appreciate cultural diversity among the Indigenous People in Canada, and the college service area, with the service excellence approach with Elders, students and staff that includes the ability to share and provide Indigenous perspective and relevant approach.

As with all of our positions at Northern Lights College, you must be able to maintain a high standard of work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to contribute collaboratively to the team.

A current, valid driver's license is required.
