Indigenous Cultural Liaison Community Coordinator Effective July 2, 2024 School District 71 (Comox Valley) is a progressive school district whose mission is to inspire engaged, compassionate, resilient lifelong learners and cultivate a collaborative community together.

We are the largest employer in the Comox Valley with over 1800 employees providing a comprehensive educational program to approximately 10,500 students from Strong Start to Grade 12 in 14 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 K-9 school, 3 secondary schools, 2 alternate schools, and a provincial on-line learning school.

  • Our annual operating budget is roughly $119 million.Reporting to the District Principal of Indigenous Education, the Cultural Community Coordinator will oversee, provide support, foster relationships and Liaison with Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff members of SD71 Schools, Indigenous families, Elders, community organization and students involved in Indigenous programs;
  • performing administrative, project work and other related duties as required.Responsibilities Foster and maintain effective working relationships with the K’omoks First Nation, Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, local and provincial Indigenous organizations Provide support to Indigenous Education staff as well as Indigenous staff, Teachers / Administrators of SD71 schools, Indigenous students and their families Identify opportunities and build community partnerships to expand and maintain existing programs including the Ni’noxsola Elders in Residence program, Warrior Society, Indigenous Cultural Presenters, Therapeutic Riding and Wellness events Arrange meetings and events with a variety of participants and coordinate the logistics, including facilities and catering Provide accurate document management of programs to support grants and community funding Identify emerging issues within school sites and the community and consult with Advisories and Committees Participate in committee and project teams as required including bi-annual reports to the Indigenous Education Council Skills, Attributes, and Competencies Required Post-Secondary Training in Social Work, Counselling and / or related field of equivalent training and experience;
  • Successful experience in working with and supporting Indigenous children and families, preferably in a school setting; Demonstrated conflict management and dispute resolution skills;
  • A minimum of 3 years experience planning and coordinating projects and events; Highly resourceful, creative and self-directed High level of personal and professional integrity Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples’ history in Canada, including residential schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report;
  • Ability to respectfully interact and relate to the lived experience of Indigenous students and their families; Demonstrated ability to maintain trust-based relationships and Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including the ability to apply for cultural grants and complete regular reports;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of community groups, school-based teams as well Indigenous and Non-Indigenous agencies, staff, students and families;
  • Knowledge of geographic, relational and governance structures for Indigenous Peoples in B.C. Proven self-motivation and ability to work well independently and part of the Indigenous Education team;

Valid Class 5 driver's license with a reliable and insured personal vehicle. Indigenous Ancestry is required. The ideal candidate will have : Experience in project coordination and management Experience in networking, engagement and facilitation Skills in operational planning, budgeting, and managing projects Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous perspectives Knowledge and understanding of the unique characteristics of K-12 schools in our school district.
