Instructor - Computer Science

Job Description :

The Computer Science Department is recruiting 1 or more part-time instructors, depending on sufficient student enrolment, to teach core computing and / or web development courses in the department for the Summer semester.

The successful candidate must be available for regular communication online and in person, commensurate with workload. Participation in departmental activity (including but not limited to regular committee / department meetings, personal and department development) is a required component of the position.

The courses will be offered in a variety of formats, both in person, online, and mixed-mode. Depending on qualifications and demand, additional sections of other CPSC offerings may be available for the upcoming and future semesters.

Qualifications

• A minimum of a Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, plus an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Demonstrated effective oral and written English communication skills.
• Recent post-secondary teaching experience is preferred, ideally in the subject area of the courses, including 2-3 years of experience using technology in teaching and learning, e.

g., videos, podcasting, visuals, etc.

• Experience using learning management system (LMS).
• Demonstrated excellence in planning, delivery and instruction of course materials across multiple modalities, face to face, mixed-mode / blended, and fully online.
• A minimum of five years full-time work experience directly related to the job is an asset

Length of appointment : Initially a one-term appointment but may continue depending on the demand for courses and subject to budget.

For Summer Term : May 1 - August 31, 2023, with one-month preparation time for a successful candidate new to Langara College / Langara Faculty Association (LFA).

Salary Range : Salary placement is on the Langara Faculty Association instructor salary scale, in accordance with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

• Planning lessons and activities that facilitate students' acquisition of basic and advanced computer skills, applications and software packages commonly used in industry.
• Plan and deliver lessons within the context of current learning outcomes and prescribed assessment practices to classes of multi-ability first- and second-year students.
• Mark assignments, quizzes, exams, projects and presentations, providing clarity in expectations through rubrics and other teaching tools.
• Invigilate final exams for assigned courses as per the Langara final exam schedule.
• Update content, dates, materials, grades, etc. within the learning management system, Brightspace by D2L.
• The successful candidate has recent experience with pedagogical approaches such as incorporating internationalization, indigenous ways, justice, equity diversity and inclusion into the preparation and delivery of teaching.
• The successful candidate must be able to host weekly Student Office Hours to provide students access to the instructor outside of classroom hours (virtual and / or face to face).
• The successful candidate is expected to collegially work, participate in planning and learning within the Computer Science department.
• The successful candidate will support students in their learning while upholding Langara’s academic integrity policy, maintain a high level of professionalism in all interactions with students, and strive for excellence in instructional practices and approaches.
