Department Overview

TMX Group's Office of the General Counsel (GCO) is a high-performing legal team with offices in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and London (U.

K.) and is responsible for providing TMX Group and its subsidiaries with the full suite of legal services they need to support and develop their businesses, including with respect to corporate, securities, governance, regulatory, commercial and intellectual property law.

Description of Role

Provide legal and regulatory support to equity trading, equites market data, and capital formation businesses

Act as key legal adviser for new initiatives led by our equities exchange trading (TSX, TSXV, Alpha) and data (Datalinx) businesses

Be actively involved in all aspects of the board and regulatory approval process for changes to equities trading and data rules, fee changes and new product offerings

Partner with the business to achieve desired regulatory outcomes

Cultivate strong working relationships with the staff of key regulators

Support the businesses' compliance with their regulatory obligations, including requirements relevant to their status as recognized exchanges

Advise Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and other leaders on new and changing regulatory requirements

Monitor securities industry and related proposed legal and policy developments in Canada and other jurisdictions

Assist with advocacy in areas of regulatory reform, including drafting responses to requests for comment on proposals that may affect TMX Group businesses, with input from the relevant stakeholders

Requirements

Member of law society in any province of Canada in good standing

4-8 years legal experience in securities, corporate and / or commercial with a reputable company or top tier law firm

Knowledge of regulatory and operational aspects of equities trading and real-time market data is an asset

Interest in equities trading, capital markets, new regulatory developments and financial innovation

Strong advocacy skills, and the ability to succinctly explain complex matters to audiences with varying degrees of background information

Understands how to work effectively within a broader enterprise with overarching priorities

Contributes to a culture of high performance, accountability and inclusivity

Strong attention to detail, but also the ability to remain focused on the big picture

Recognizes the importance of understanding client needs and giving intelligent, thoughtful and practical advice

Ability to take on responsibilities autonomously and to manage numerous priorities optimally

Thrive in constantly changing environment

Self-starter but also team-oriented
