Job Description :

The Indigenous Learning Strategist is a non-instructional faculty position that reports to the Associate Director, Academic Success Centre (ASC) and works in close collaboration with the Executive Director, Indigenous Initiatives, Indigenous Education and Services (IES), IES staff and Elders.

The primary responsibility of this role is to assess learning strategy needs of all students, with a strong focus on Indigenous students.

It involves delivering both online and in-person programs, including short courses, workshops, and peer educator training.

The role will collaborate closely with the Indigenous Education and Services team to provide targeted support for Indigenous students, while also working with the ASC team to offer academic support services for all students.

About the Academic Success Centre and Indigenous Education and Services

The Academic Sucess Centre provides centralized academic support for students throughout their student journey, with the goal of ensuring student success.

Programs and services housed within the Centre include academic skills courses, supplemental instruction, workshops, and peer tutoring, delivered online and in-person.

The Indigenous Education and Services (IES) and Gathering Space teams are founded upon teamwork, honesty, and integrity. Team members are Indigenous student services professionals who are dedicated to empowering Indigenous peoples, families, and communities through post-secondary education.

IES team members work in close collaboration with colleagues across the college in the spirit of collegiality. IES recognizes and honours the cultural diversity of Indigenous peoples, including gender and sexual diversity, and values the different ways of knowing, being and doing Indigenous.

Following the traditional teachings, the team takes a culturally grounded, community-based approach to their work. It also acts as a hub for centralized student services to connect with and support Indigenous students.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assess the learning strategy needs of Indigenous and n on-Indigenous students with an integrated approach to address a wide range of academic support needs.
  • Plan, develop, and deliver learning strategy programs to support the learning needs of :
  • diverse learners at snəw̓eyəɬ leləm ̓ Langara College.
  • Indigenous students with a community-based approach that recognizes the cultural diversity and many ways of knowing, being and doing Indigenous.
  • Deliver group instruction on academic and learning skills to students online and in-person.
  • Create multimodal resources and activities that promote academic and learning skills development for students .
  • Regularly participate in team meetings with Indigenous Education and Services, and the Academic Success Centre .
  • Engage in consultation with campus partners including Student Services, Library and instructional faculty to ensure a holistic student experience.
  • Gather, analyze and present aggregated student and programming related data, as required, to inform services and course improvements, and the strategic and operational direction of the Academic Success Centre.
  • Develop reports and deliver presentations to external and internal stakeholders about programs as required .

Qualifications Required

Education & Experience :

  • Master's degree in education, instructional design, educational or cognitive Psychology or related discipline.
  • Experience working in an academic advising, teaching and / or learning strategist role in a post-secondary environment.
  • Experience with development, delivery and assessment of learning strategy programming .
  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the cultures and histories of Indigenous peoples of British Columbia .
  • Demonstrate detailed understanding of the systemic issues and barriers discouraging Indigenous students from pursuing and completing a post-secondary education.
  • Demonstrated experience living and working within Indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of Indigenous cultural values, practices, and protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop and deliver information, resources, and training on educational technologies including learning management systems (Brightspace preferred).
  • P roven ability to effectively support learners with diverse linguistic, cultural, socio-economic, and neurodiverse needs
  • Land-based experiences and Indigenous knowledge are considered an asset.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers is also considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of work and educational experience may be considered.

This position is dedicated to supporting Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The selection process will provide priority to Indigenous people, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit applicants of Canada.
