The Controller is a senior finance leader responsible for the day-to-day execution, modernization, and continuous improvement of the organization’s accounting and financial operations. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller plays a critical role in strengthening the finance function so that the CFO can focus on executive-level strategy, Board engagement, external relationships, and long-term financial sustainability.
This role is hands-on and transformation focused. The Controller is expected to lead significant process improvement, training, and operational oversight within the finance department, including reassessing workflows, systems, and the organizational structure as needed. With a strong foundation in technical accounting and modern financial technologies, the Controller will drive efficiency, accuracy, and scalability across a complex, multi-entity environment.
Operating within an Indigenous housing and community services context, the Controller must approach financial leadership with cultural humility, accountability to funders and communities, and an understanding of the regulatory, funding, and reporting environments that support Indigenous-led housing and services.
Key Accountabilities
In the performance of these responsibilities, the Controller is accountable for :
Leadership and Team Development
- Provide strong day-to-day leadership, training, and oversight of the accounting team, ensuring consistent application of policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Assess current roles, workflows, and skill sets within the finance department and recommend changes to the organizational structure, resourcing, or responsibilities to improve effectiveness and accountability.
- Develop and implement standardized processes, documentation, and training programs to build internal capacity and reduce operational risk.
- Lead change management initiatives within the finance team, fostering a culture of learning, continuous improvement, and service excellence.
- Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular check-ins, and partner with HR on performance management, professional development, and succession planning.
Strategic Financial Partnership
Work closely with the CFO to provide timely, accurate, and insightful financial information to internal and external stakeholders.Support organizational and multi-entity strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes.Prepare and present financial analyses, dashboards, and reports that clearly communicate trends, risks, and opportunities.Proactively advise leadership on financial impacts of operational and strategic decisions.Financial Oversight and Reporting
Oversee full-cycle accounting for development projects and property management operations, using Yardi Voyager as the primary accounting platform.Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS.Prepare annual corporate and entity-level budgets and forecasts in collaboration with operational leaders.Manage audits, coordinate with external auditors, implement recommendations, and complete year-end processes.Ensure accurate funder, grant, RFP, and procurement-related financial reporting and compliance.Oversee payroll processing to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely approvals.Manage intercompany transactions, allocations, and variance analysis across multiple entities.Maintain robust cash flow forecasting to support both operational needs and long-term strategic planning.Lead the modernization of accounting systems, tools, and processes, leveraging technology and automation to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting quality.Optimize accounting systems, processes, and controls for efficiency, and compliance.Compliance and Governance
Ensure compliance with all applicable tax, regulatory, and statutory requirements.Liaise with CRA and external advisors regarding GST, income tax, payroll, and other regulatory reviews.Oversee preparation of tax filings for corporations, partnerships, joint ventures, and other entities, ensuring accuracy prior to CFO review and approval.Develop, maintain, and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and governance frameworks.Stakeholder Relations
Building Strong, respectful working relationships with internal departments, recognizing the operational realities of Indigenous housing and community-based services.Collaborate with external stakeholders including funders, banks, auditors, and government agencies, ensuring transparent and timely financial communication.Support the CFO in providing clear, reliable financial information to the CEO, Board of Directors, and community partners.Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
7-10 years progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.Demonstrated experience leading finance or accounting teams through process improvement, system upgrades, or departmental transformation.Experience in a multi-entity, regulated, or funder-driven environment.Experience in Indigenous housing, affordable housing, real estate, development, or nonprofit accounting is a strong asset.Experience working with government funding, grants, and complex compliance and reporting requirements.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Advanced proficiency in Yardi Voyager (required).Strong knowledge of IFRS and applicable reporting standards.Solid understanding of payroll regulations, taxable benefits, and corporate and entity level tax filings.Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting and financial reporting systems.Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.Clear and confident communicator, able to translate complex financial information for non-financial audiences.Collaborative, proactive, and solutions-oriented mindset.Job Type
