The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has openings for Camp Leader Students for the summer of 2024. Applications will be accepted starting for a period up to June 28, 2024.

Applications will only be kept on file until June 30, 2024. To be considered for the first round of interviews, please submit your application by March 8, 2024.

Job Description

The Camp Leader position is responsible for delivering a high-quality summer children’s camp program to registered participants.

In addition, summer camp leaders will be required to actively supervise all program activities including lunch.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Perform Acting Team Leader' duties as required
  • Be a positive role model for program participants and other summer staff
  • Follow policies and procedures in place relevant to the position
  • Communicate with parents as required
  • May be required to modify activities to ensure age appropriateness
  • Will be required to assist in managing participant behaviours
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of camp activities suitable for the age, abilities and interests of campers
  • Daily activities generally include : Active Games Arts and Crafts Drama Activities Fitness Breaks Swimming / Water Play
  • Demonstrate energy and enthusiasm for the program activities and take the lead on activities and programs
  • Implement the philosophies of HIGH FIVE
  • Work both indoors and outdoors, work weekday hours, with occasional weekend hours

Essential Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to those enrolled in secondary or post-secondary education in recreation or child / youth education, and experience working with children between the ages of 4 and 12
  • Because of the responsibilities of the program for leaders, applicants must be 16 years of age or older to apply
  • Preference will be given to those with previous experience as a Camp Leader (or other similar camp environment)
  • Because program numbers at each camp may fluctuate from week to week, students may be required to work at various program sites throughout the municipality during the summer

Certifications / memberships / licenses

  • Current Certification in Standard First Aid / CPR (WSIB approved) prior to camps opening
  • Certified with the High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development prior to camps opening

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver’s license / vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's license with a reliable motor vehicle is preferred.

Background check requirements

Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment.

Bending : frequent stooping, twisting, kneeling, crouching, squatting (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (kneeling, crouching, squatting while communicating with children;

bending while preparing for activities; bending while cleaning up activities; bending while packing up materials)

Walking : frequent walking on rough surface; constant walking on level surface (walking throughout duration of program at program facility / park;

walking on field trips)

Reaching : frequent reaching above shoulder, below shoulder, forward, backward, handling (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs) (reaching for program material for program set-up / take down;

lifting participants in cases of emergencies)

Lifting : frequent lifting at shoulder, carrying, transferring; constant lifting floor to waist, waist to shoulder (up to 22.
