Brass Token is a boutique game development studio based in Vancouver, BC. We create original third person story-driven action games and we are also engaged in exciting AAA co-development projects.
We’re growing our all-star team and looking for an experienced Technical Artist (5+ years of direct work experience) .

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an experienced Technical Artist (5+ years direct work experience) who is passionate about creating realistic experiences in fantastic worlds.
This role is responsible for being up to date on the latest developments in technology to help guide, support and inspire the rest of the team to increase visual efficiency and deliver the unexpected.
The Technical Artist is a creator that takes advantage of Unreal’s ever-growing toolset.
Responsibilities
- Liaise between programming and art teams to create and execute strategies to optimize art for multiple. consoles and system requirements.
- Create and optimize shaders and materials within Unreal.
- Create, implement and optimize special effects based on concept art and video reference.
- Work to ensure final art runs to full visual resolution.
- Guide artists and engineers through the 3D art pipeline while providing hands-on support for asset performance and cross platform optimization.
- Work within the limits of the game engine, curating file sizes, polygon counts and loading speeds.
- Work with the cinematics team to support special case functionality (set-piece moments, atmospherics).
- Resolve material errors and collision issues.
- Research and develop technical tools for projects.
- Solve complex technical issues during development.
- Monitor the performance of the game.
- Maintain technical documentation.
- Support the team in developing and maintaining standards (naming, coding, best-practices, etc.).
- Play the game regularly and provide feedback and suggestions to the team as both a gamer and a developer.
Requirements
- Knowledge of game art pipelines.
- Familiarity with the following : Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Blender, Maya, Houdini.
- Understand & able to optimize for games performance limitations.
- Experience with Shaders, Lighting, and Rendering systems.
- Experience with shader architecture and material libraries for products and the supporting workflows and pipelines.
- Understanding of real-time game content and the requirements for these to be efficient and high quality.
- Proficient in shader authoring and languages.
- Knowledge and interest in multiple areas of game development : Modelling & Texturing, Shaders, Lighting, Rendering and Post Processes, Scripting, Physics Simulation and Destruction, FX, Procedural.
- Current Generation console development experience.
- 5+ Years Experience as a Technical Artist working on Image Quality, Shaders & Materials, Lighting, Post FX, Rendering, Performance, and Pipelines.
Pluses
- Shipped at least one AAA game on console.
- Programming skills (any relevant language : HLSL / GLSL, C++, Python).
- Working experience in Unreal Engine.
- Code quality skills : data structures, optimization.
- Experience in 3D art or tech (rendering) background in games.
