Our agency is seeking a highly skilled and analytical Senior Financial Analyst on behalf of our esteemed public-sector client based in Edmonton, Alberta. Reporting to the Senior Financial Officer / Executive Director of Finance, Facilities, and Procurement within the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services, this role plays a pivotal part in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial operations.

In this position, you will execute hands-on accounting and financial analysis, oversee month-end and year-end activities, handle complex reconciliations, and contribute to internal and external audit preparedness. Operating with a high degree of independence and professional judgment, you will serve as a trusted technical resource, advising on accounting standards, internal controls, and continuous process improvements.

While this role is predominantly remote, candidates must reside within Alberta and be available to attend occasional, short-notice in-office meetings or work sessions in Edmonton (with reasonable notice provided).

Responsibilities
•Perform complex account reconciliations, journal entry preparations, and in-depth financial data analysis.
•Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting workflows, including comprehensive month-end and year-end closing tasks.
•Monitor and analyze accounts receivable, revenue streams, payroll-related transactions, and inter-unit accounts.
•Review financial transactions for precision, completeness, and adherence to applicable policies, legislation, and accounting standards.
•Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve operational accounting, reporting, and financial system issues.
•Support internal and external audit activities by compiling documentation, reconciliations, and detailed working papers.
•Identify operational risks, evaluate control gaps, and design robust financial procedures, documentation, and reporting tools.
•Provide technical guidance on accounting standards, internal controls, and central agency policies.
•Assist in the implementation of ERP system enhancements, financial system upgrades, and process improvement initiatives.



Qualifications
Mandatory Requirements:
•Excel Expertise (5+ years): Demonstrated experience leveraging advanced Excel functions (e.g., Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, complex formulas) for financial modeling and analysis.
•Core Accounting Standards (5+ years): In-depth background applying fundamental accounting principles, reporting standards, and financial frameworks.
•Financial Data Analysis (4+ years): Proven experience utilizing data analysis techniques to profile, reconcile, and validate financial information.
•Financial Reporting & Accuracy (4+ years): Hands-on experience executing financial reporting routines while upholding rigorous accuracy standards.
•SharePoint Online (4+ years): Proficiency working within SharePoint Online environments for collaboration and document management.
•Location & Equipment: Must be located in Alberta and possess a personal computer running a modern OS compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint (Windows OS preferred).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
•Designation & Education: A recognized accounting designation (CPA) and/or post-secondary education in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related discipline.
•ERP Experience (4+ years): Hands-on experience navigating Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP).
•Financial Systems & Controls (4+ years): Experience calculating, posting, correcting, and managing accounting figures within complex systems.
•Auditing & Controls (3+ years): Practical experience applying financial audit procedures, internal controls, and risk management frameworks.
•Clearance Requirements: Must successfully pass a basic criminal background check, a credit check, and qualify for Enhanced/Level 2 security clearance upon offer.
