About Bella Bella, BC

The village of Bella Bella can be found on the east coast of Campbell Island, on the Central Coast region of British Columbia, approximately 180 kilometers north of Port Hardy and 145 kilometres west of Bella Coola.

Ideal for any outdoor enthusiast, the area boasts the natural splendour of the Great Bear Rainforest, as well as a range of outdoor activities including fishing, kayaking, camping and whale watching.

The largest community on the Central Coast north of Queen Charlotte Strait, Bella Bella has a population of around 1,450 and is also home to the Heiltsuk First Nation.

Despite its remote location, the community is provided access to a regional airport, BC Ferries terminal, a regional hospital, and a number of services and recreational outlets, as well as unmatched natural beauty.

About the Opportunity

The Hailika’as Heiltsuk Health Centre has an exciting opportunity for a Generalist Clinical Counsellor to join our team in Bella Bella, British Columbia, on a full-time basis.

You will be responsible for delivering direct clinical services, including intake, assessment, treatment, liaising, and facilitating necessary referrals.

Your key responsibilities will include :

  • Conducting ongoing individual and family counselling sessions
  • Creating and leading therapeutic groups
  • Conducting continuous suicide risk assessments and intervening in crises
  • Ensuring the maintenance of appropriate professional clinical and administrative records and documentation
  • Demonstrating ethical professionalism and adherence to legal standards
  • Providing comprehensive case management services
  • Cultivating and nurturing productive relationships with clients, community members, and interagency professionals
  • Adhering to professional standards and codes of ethics relevant to their designation and applicable legislation
  • Offering community psychoeducational training and actively participating in mental health and wellness events and programs
  • Engaging in regular individual and group clinical supervision and consultation
  • Participating in individual and team professional development training
  • Practicing trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches
  • Assisting clients in completing drug and alcohol treatment applications and facilitating referrals

More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will have a Master's Degree from an accredited university in a relevant field, and a valid registration with one of the following regulatory bodies : (CCPA, BCACC, RSW, RCSW, CATA).

You will also bring 2 years of experience with direct experience working in counselling including within First Nations communities.

Preference will be given to candidates of Indigenous ancestry.

Due to the nature of this role, you will be required to provide evidence of a clear criminal record check.

The ideal candidate will be equipped with :

  • Strong interpersonal communication and clinical writing / documentation skills
  • Diverse clinical knowledge, skills, and modalities to support clients' mental health and wellness goals
  • Working knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally safe practice
  • Understanding of historical and intergenerational trauma and its relevance to contemporary Indigenous social issues
  • Ability to apply Indigenous perspectives on health, mental health, and wellness in counselling
  • Proficiency in understanding and applying Heiltsuk culture and community-based knowledge in a culturally sensitive manner
  • Experience with harm reduction, substance abuse assessment, and treatment interventions / plans
  • Capability to provide clinical services to individuals, families, and groups.
  • Competence in offering mental health resources and making referrals to external agencies or internal services
  • Familiarity with rural and remote communities, including their strengths, barriers, and counselling service challenges
  • Adherence to professional conduct, maintenance of boundaries, and upholding confidentiality standards
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Knowledge and experience in suicide assessment, intervention, and safety planning
  • Application of professional ethics in practice
  • Understanding of available mental health and substance use services and how to refer clients to them
  • Basic computer literacy, including MS Office products
  • Commitment to self-care and maintaining personal wellness as part of professional practice
  • Utilization of self-reflection for ongoing professional development

The Halilka’as Heiltsuk Centre Society is aligned with the PHO requiring all current and future employees to be vaccinated under the mandatory COVID-19 vaccine policy.
