JOB OVERVIEW

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Camp Goodtimes provides children and youth affected by cancer and their families with an unforgettable overnight summer camp experience in a medically supervised, safe and supportive environment.

We have been committed to providing a camping experience for children affected by cancer since 1985.

The Canadian Cancer Society believes that time spent at camp allows kids to just be kids, away from their diagnosis. Camp Goodtimes is proud to provide programming that gives joy, confidence, support, and hope for children with cancer and their families.

The Waterfront Supervisor oversees the waterfront operations at Camp Goodtimes ensuring the safety and positive experience of all campers, volunteers, and staff on the waterfront and they ensure swimming and boating activities meet BCCA and CCS standards.

He / She / They is responsible for the management of the waterfront program leaders, overseeing the annual set-up and clean-up of the waterfront facility overseeing the delivery of all waterfront programming.

This position is a member of the program leader team at camp. The program leader team is responsible for instructing camp activities and supporting other staff and volunteers in delivering programs.

They will also have other daily responsibilities such as helping with supervision of campers, evening cabin support, facilitating early morning and evening programs, program logistics, and care / maintenance of camp program equipment.

COMMITMENT :

May 10- 11 training at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC

June 3 28 pre-camp prep at the Canadian Cancer Society office in Vancouver, BC

June 30 August 4th, 2024 on-site living at camp for 6 sessions at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC (at least 24 hours off each week).

Meals and accommodation included.

August 9 23, 2024 on-site living at camp for 3 sessions at Camp Pringle, Shawnigan Lake, BC (at least 24 hours off each week).

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING :

  • Waterfront program planningReview and revise Camp Goodtimes waterfront policy and procedures for both sitesUpdate waterfront program plans for boating and swimmingWork with the Camper Experience Coordinator and Medical Coordinator to create inclusive program plans to meet the diverse needs of participants at the waterfrontIdentify inventory needs for waterfront and ensure materials have been purchased
  • Assist with developing and delivering innovative training that supports professional development of staff & volunteers.

Ensure all staff are familiar with waterfront emergency procedures.

  • Ensure that all waterfront policies / procedures and Camp Goodtimes’ high risk management standards are met at all times by all participants, staff, volunteers, and guests while at the waterfront.
  • Assist the Program Director in planning and scheduling waterfront programs and events.
  • Train waterfront program leaders on the Camp Goodtimes waterfront emergency procedures.
  • Supervise waterfront program leaders
  • Facilitate camper-focused swimming and boating activities when required.
  • Assist in facilitating evening and all-camp programs when waterfront is not in use.
  • Contribute to our culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Previous experience in aquatics, camping, youth recreation and or / experiential education
  • Strong supervision, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Thorough knowledge of waterfront safety
  • Thorough knowledge of first aid and water rescue
  • Ability to mentor and coach lifeguards
  • Experience working with populations with a range of accessibility needs
  • Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work as a team member.
  • Experience or understanding of cancer diagnosis and it’s physiological, social and emotional impact or a willingness to learn.
  • National Lifeguard (NL) current within two years
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor current within two years
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card
  • Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) as an asset
  • Boating certification considered as an asset
  • Criminal Record Search including vulnerable sector check (once hired)
  • Must provide proof of up-to-date childhood immunizations
