Temporary Design Teacher

Position Purpose & Overview

The Design Teacher is responsible for developing and delivering engaging lessons that teach students key design concepts.

They will integrate modern tools and technologies while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through project-based learning.

The role also involves assessing student progress, managing the classroom environment, and collaborating with colleagues to enhance the design curriculum.

The Design Teacher will instruct design classes across Grades 6 to 8, in the IB Middle Years Programme. Candidates applying for this role will have experience of teaching Design, ideally at MYP level.

Key Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities and duties are inclusive of, but not limited to :

Demonstrate a passion for student-centered teaching and displaying flexibility in teaching style while effectively planning and preparing for classes.

Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons in design, incorporating both theoretical and practical elements.

Teach a variety of art and design techniques and mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media.

Integrate modern design tools and technologies, such as CAD software, 3D modeling, and other digital design tools, into lessons.

Organize and display student artwork, creating opportunities for students to showcase their work.

Adhere to the scheduled class times for teaching classes, maintain availability for student support, and attend meetings at the designated times.

Promptly informing the Program Coordinator(s) of any necessary changes to curriculum, planning, and obtaining approval for any trips or events from the Senior School Principal.

Develop a classroom environment that builds positive relationships and fosters an ethic of care.

Design, prepare and deliver learning activities that facilitate authentic engagement.

Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs.

Use relevant technology to enhance instruction and learning.

Maintain a well-organized and stimulating learning environment.

Use information about prior achievement to set expectations for student learning.

Provide clear and constructive feedback to students and their families and caregivers.

Design and implement a range of authentic assessments for both monitoring and measuring student learning, providing appropriate and timely feedback to students.

Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress for the purposes of teaching, learning and reporting.

Participate in faculty and parent meetings and special events.

Model respectful and timely communication with students, colleagues, and parents.

Endorse the school’s mission, vision, and values.

This role will require working hours outside of school office hours : often evening events; occasionally going offsite to document student programs;

and occasional morning and weekend commitments.

On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity.

Job Information

Full-time fixed-term contract position. (September 16th, 2024 - December 20th, 2024).

Work location : on-site.

Comprehensive benefits package.

Annual Salary ranges from $62,133 to $116,773 based on the school’s teacher salary grid. Placement on the grid is assigned in accordance with level of education and years of teaching experience.

Annual salary is prorated based on the length of contract.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Education or Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field.

A valid BC Certification of Teaching

Previous teaching experience in design or fine arts.

Proficiency in design softwares (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, SketchUp).

Qualities and Skills

Strong understanding of art and design techniques and principles.

Excellent communication and classroom management skills.

Passion for working with children and fostering their creativity.

Ability to inspire and motivate students of varying skill levels.

Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of different age groups and learning styles.

Experience teaching in the IB MYP

Familiarity with BC’s curriculum

Experience collaboratively planning lesson plans, units of instruction, and interdisciplinary assessments

Knowledge and experience with delivering experiential learning, including service and inquiry-based learning.

Conditions of Employment

The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-Aid training provided by St.

John’s School and provide consent for a criminal background check for vulnerable sector

Clearance on criminal record check for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment

Ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment
