Software Engineering Manager – Sustaining Engineering
Join Canonical to lead a distributed engineering team in safeguarding and evolving open source components that power enterprise‑grade infrastructure. This role reports to the Global Director of Sustaining Engineering and focuses on people, delivery, and customer impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, coach, and grow a globally distributed team of software engineers.
- Hire, mentor, and develop career pathways for team members.
- Set and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for engineering effectiveness and quality.
- Own timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions for Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS.
- Advocate for modern software development practices across the organization.
- Build a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with Canonical’s values.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with other teams and senior stakeholders.
- Represent Canonical in external customer interactions and promote the brand.
Qualifications
Professional software delivery experience with C, C++, Go, Python, or similar.Strong passion for open source software, Linux, and cloud computing.Leadership experience with ability to prioritize and resolve complex bug‑fix workflows.Proficiency with Git and other version control systems.Experience with debugging tools (e.g., gdb, crash) and testing methodologies.Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.Experience with Linux and preference for Ubuntu.Knowledge of open source and open source business models.People‑management experience in a support organization is a strong plus.Benefits
