Job Duties
General
- To help Lethbridge College students understand writing assignment concepts, how to follow writing assignment structures, how to time manage writing assignments, and how to improve their performance in their writing assignments.
- To provide feedback on students’ assignments and to provide students with ways to improve their work.
- To help students to identify and find the assistance they need for more specific writing challenges.
- To assist with the promotion of The Learning Café services and program.
Tutoring
- Provide 1 : 1 tutoring to LC students.
- Judge when a referral is needed (when a request is beyond one’s knowledge and scope) and effectively refer learners to appropriate resources.
- Maintain confidentiality on academic matters students disclose to them.
- Attend and participate in all required trainings and monthly writing strategist meetings.
- Complete the Peer Writing Training program during first semester of employment.
- Maintain accurate records of completed sessions (to be emailed to Integrated Supports Specialist).
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Integrated Supports Specialist.
Writing help
- Facilitate student learning of effective writing processes such as deciphering / troubleshooting assignment requirements and steps, brainstorming, drafting, organization, proofreading, and revising.
- Help to identify and explain their thesis statements and topic sentences.
- Provide a student with readers response.
- Modelling how to create citations and reference entries, and how to effectively use the student APA guide.
- Encourage students to become more confident in their writing skills.
- Search for, select, and demonstrate appropriate resources from a broad-range of academic writing materials.
- Judge when a referral is needed (when a request is beyond one’s knowledge and scope) and effectively refer learners to appropriate resources.
Learning strategies and time management
- Model and discuss learning strategies such as time management and study skills.
- Suggest proactive approaches and strategies to navigate assignments (attending class, asking for clarification, etc.).
- Search for, select, and demonstrate appropriate resources from a broad-range of learning strategies resources.
Other
Attend training prior to tutoring and throughout the semester.
Required Qualifications
- Must be currently enrolled in a Lethbridge College program
- Must have completed ENG-1150 and / or ENG-1159 with a B or higher grade
- Must have one recommendation from the ENG-1150 or ENG-1159 instructor
