Duties

Delivering interpretive activities and presentations to provide visitors of Banff National Park with opportunities to discover, appreciate, learn about and enjoy the place and its natural and cultural resources and understand their significance to Canada

Engaging hundreds of visitors per day at busy day- use areas

Sharing the importance of proper food storage while picnicking as well as safe wildlife viewing practices, and keeping the "wild" in wildlife

Spending a significant amount of time per day driving vans

Assisting with facilitation of safe wildlife viewing opportunities for visitors at wildlife jams (several vehicles parked along the road, people out of vehicles blocking the flow of traffic) to ensure the safety of motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and wildlife

Work environment

This could be your work place; Rocky Mountain peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, a picture-perfect mountain town, abundant wildlife and scenic drives come together in Banff National Park - Canadas first national park and the flagship of the nations park system.

Over four million visitors a year travel to the park for a variety of activities including hiking, biking, skiing and camping in some of the worlds most breathtaking mountain scenery.

Banff is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As a student heritage presenter, you will spend your summer learning and growing your interpretation skills in a busy and engaging environment! You will be working with a team of heritage presenters and interpretation officers to deliver important stories to visitors.

Some of the topics you will discuss are human wildlife coexistence, species at risk, aquatic invasive species, fire & climate change, and responsible park stewardship.

You will work on one of the following 3 teams :

Downtown & Day use area Interpretation : You will be patrolling day use areas and connecting with visitors about responsible picking and managing wildlife attractants.

You will also deliver fun activity stations in downtown Banff and at day use areas

  • Living with Wildlife Interpreters : You will patrol secondary roadways to educate visitors on safe-wildlife viewing. You will deliver drop-in programming at busy day use areas to educate visitors about staying safe in wildlife country and how to coexist with wildlife
  • Theatre interpreters : You will deliver fun and educational stage- based evening programs daily in the campground theatres, and you will deliver drop-in programming at busy day use areas

Intent of the process

The results may be used in the future to fill other temporary student vacancies that may arise in the Banff Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Open to students currently enrolled in secondary or post-secondary school in an accredited institution and / or those participating in adult education and retraining programs at the secondary level, operated under the authority of an accredited academic institution.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS :

Possession and maintenance of a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license or equivalent.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

Willing and able to work shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime

Willingness to stand or walk for long periods of time in varied terrains and weather conditions

Conditions of employment

Successful completion and maintenance of reliability security clearance

Willing and able to wear a Parks Canada uniform and safety equipment
