Position Overview :

The Community Capacity Building team’s mission is to ensure the vibrancy and vitality of the Greater Toronto Jewish community by strengthening the essential infrastructure necessary for the Jewish Community and addressing the most pressing challenges of today.

This team leads the UJA’s strategy in community planning and investments. This group has significant portfolios lead by subject matter experts with teams of professionals.

These portfolios are :

  • Jewish Education and Engagement
  • Affordability of Jewish Life
  • Research and Community Insights
  • Human Services
  • The Toronto Holocaust Museum and the Ontario Jewish Archives

The work is underpinned by an evidence-based approach, partnerships with a wide range of community organizations and deep relationships with philanthropic partners.

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the SVP is a strategic advisor who will oversee day to day operations of the team to strengthen the Jewish Community.

As the strategic facilitator, the SVP will be responsible for the operating relationship between UJA’s planning team and other departments including Integrated Development, Finance, HR, Marketing, and others.

The SVP will ensure that UJA’s planning team is equipped to address the most pressing issues facing the Jewish community today and into the future.

The SVP may participate in several lay committees such as the Granting Process Committee and will support the Subject Matter Experts in leading

committees relevant to their portfolios. While not directly responsible for fundraising, the SVP will work closely with the Chief Program Officer and the Integrated Development department in stewarding and cultivating donors.

Role Responsibilities :

Strategic Planning and Organization

Work with CCB subject matter experts and other key stakeholders to develop a strategic plan for the department that clearly defines the key objectives the department is seeking to achieve, the metrics that will be used to measure success in achieving these objectives, the goals that will denote success, the strategies that will be developed to arrive at these goals and the tactics that will be executed;

support individual business units within the department to do the same, as necessary.

Business Operations

  • Establish quantitative and qualitative metrics, guidelines, and standards by which the department’s efficiency and effectiveness can be evaluated.
  • Review, analyze, and evaluate business procedures, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop, implement and communicate new policies, procedures and directives to guide decision making and that will improve day-to-day operations.
  • Develop granting processes that are consistent across team (and potentially across departments), and oversee the external granting process including grant applications, review, approvals and reporting.
  • Ensure operational compliance and act as primary contact for audits.

Data, Intelligence and Analytics

  • Support SMEs to utilize data in order to identify and mount interventions to address the most pressing challenges facing the Jewish community.
  • Oversee the gathering and analysis of information which informs departmental decisions.
  • Understand how research is consumed across the organization to ensure maximum synergy and utilization.

Technology

  • Oversee the development of technology processes, solutions and integrations to support the operations of the department, liaising with the IT and Application teams.
  • Implement digital tools to support development operations.

Budgets and Approvals

  • Plan, direct, control, implement, evaluate, monitor, and forecast the annual budget for the department, including managing decision rights and approvals relating to expenditures.
  • Review monthly financial reports and quarterly financial statements with Finance using key metrics such as year-to-date expense, operating variance to budget, return on investment, etc.

Relationship Management

  • Build strong relationships between UJA’s planning team and other departments.
  • Collaborate with the Integrated Development Department and others on stewarding and cultivating donors.

People Leadership

Recruit, motivate, develop and retain talent to deliver impactful results; champion a flexible, agile and inclusive work environment, prioritizing health and well-being of team.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Graduate degree in nonprofit management, or related fields including law, business or equivalent.
  • 10+years of relevant business / work experience.
  • PMP or other project management qualifications considered an asset.
  • Previous experience managing and developing talent.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly build rapport with colleagues and stakeholders, donors, lay leadership, and the community.
  • Deep experience in leading and navigating complex environments with multiple stakeholders and change management.
  • Experience in evidence-based strategy development.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and budgets.
  • Able to identify key issues and strategically overcome internal challenges and obstacles.
  • Effective delegation skills, with a strong focus on operations and business processes and continuous improvements.
  • Strong project reporting skills with a focus on interdepartmental communication.
  • Critical thinker with sound analytical planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Strong problem solving, decision making and analytical capabilities with an excellent attention to detail.
  • Self starter, ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative, team player and effective team builder.
  • Strong, strategic business savvy people leader and change agent.
  • High degree of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Strong awareness of the Jewish community, its demographics and organizational structure.
