JOB SUMMARY :
Under the direction of the Director, Facilities Infrastructure and Services, the Maintenance Operator performs tasks related to the overall upkeep, environment and security of library property and buildings.
The position carries out a range of minor repairs and installations not requiring certification status. The position involves shift work and independent, unsupervised time and can be physically demanding.
The position provides other maintenance-related support services throughout the library system and liaises with a broad spectrum of internal clients.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Monitors system-wide physical plant, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, to provide a safe, healthy, and comfortable building environment that meets current regulations and standards.
2. Conducts demand maintenance. Assists the Building Operator in performing preventative maintenance procedures.
3. Responds to equipment malfunctions. Carries out assigned maintenance and other duties, as appropriate. May assist the Building Operator in dealing with the contractors to ensure that repair work is carried out in a timely and satisfactory manner.
4. Conducts grounds maintenance as assigned including the operation of equipment and tools for snow and ice removal, grass cutting and window cleaning.
5. Performs minor repairs and improvements in the areas of painting, drywall repair, flooring, plumbing, and carpentry, and identifies the needs for minor repair and improvements to the Building Operator or Director, Facilities Infrastructure and Services.
6. Carries out vigilant observation of premises to ensure building safety and security. Takes corrective action to maintain safety and security.
7. Performs assigned janitorial duties and monitors the hygiene and cleanliness standards of the Library. Reports health and safety deficiencies to the Building Operator or Director, Facilities Infrastructure and Services.
8. Provides support service in the areas of room set up and transportation of equipment, furniture and materials between sites.
9. May respond to after-hours emergencies related to Library property.
10. Performs other duties as are consistent with the responsibilities of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS :
1. High school graduation. Building Systems Technician certificate an asset.
2. Fireman’s certificate.
3. Demonstrated ability to perform basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, drywall and flooring repair.
4. Knowledge of boiler safety and WHIMIS regulations combined with a basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
5. Ability to set priorities and multi-task.
6. Demonstrated ability to inspect and operate motorized equipment.
7. Class 5 driver’s license required. Possess and maintain a clean driving record.
8. Physical capacity to carry out the demands of the position.
9. Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised, responsibly and co-operatively with other employees and contractors, and be able to meet project objectives and timelines.
