URGENCE MARINE ENVIRONNEMENTGreater Montreal Metropolitan Area, Canada- Temps plein
Founded in 1970 and headquartered in Montreal, Urgence Marine Environnement (UME) has grown into the leading provider of marine and environmental services to vessels navigating along the St. Lawrence Seaway, with teams regularly dispatched to perform mission critical operations in the Port of Montreal, Port of Quebec, Trois-Rivières, Sorel and the Great Lakes. UME’s services include marine waste management and disposal, specialized vessel cleaning, emergency spill response, mooring and marine equipment rental. The company’s full suite of services, strategic location, highly trained staff, longstanding relationships and reputation for quality in highly regulated environments has enabled them to grow and earn the trust of customers (ship operators and chartering agents), as well as to play a vital role in safeguarding fragile marine ecosystems.
Having achieved impressive growth over the last few years, UME is rounding out its leadership team, with a focus on elevating its financial reporting structure. The company is looking to bring on a financial leader that will help it get to the next level in terms of financial management, working directly with the CEO and the board to provide strong controls and actionable insights.
Snowdon Partners , a leading mid-market private investment firm, has recently made an important investment in UME, and has partnered with the company to launch a search for a Director of Finance . This role represents a unique opportunity to build and lead a finance function in a growing private equity-backed business, and to achieve immediate and lasting impact by building out the company’s capabilities in accounting, strategic planning, and risk management.
The Role Philosophy
Reporting directly to the CEO, working closely with the private equity CFO and managing a team of two (2) strong direct reports, the Director of Finance serves as the company’s financial quarterback and is a key member of the leadership team, participating in strategic discussions and supporting all areas of the business.
The ideal candidate will not only build and implement accurate and timely financial reports, tailored KPIs and actionable insights to drive the business forward but will also develop best-in-class budgeting and forecasting tools as well as implement strong IT practices.
Given the recent private equity investment in the company, this role will follow a slightly more intense pace than traditional director of finance roles but will also provide direct exposure to the private equity group CFO and investors as well as real participation in strategic decisions.
Who You Are
The successful candidate is a hands-on accounting and finance leader with a strong drive to build processes, identify KPIs and put structures in place for the company’s financial function. You believe that financial management starts with getting the basics right in terms of timely and accurate reporting, but you understand that financial leadership is about much more. You are driven by the possibility of change and are undeterred by early failures, choosing instead to push through and identify which elements of your strategy will stick. You are a collaborator and learner, and you will dive into UME’s financial results, analyze its processes, and collaborate with the core finance team to understand what truly sets the company apart from other organizations.
You believe that progress comes from thinking big and working hard to achieve an audacious goal – this is how you have achieved success in your prior roles. You show up as your authentic self to work, taking on new challenges with purpose, energy and enthusiasm.
What You Will Build
Reporting and controls : using data, you will build actionable insights and enhance our executive team’s visibility and decision-making.
- Manage the company’s financial accounts

Financial accounting and cash management : as our financial quarterback, you will ensure our accounting is always up to date and our cash position is optimal, balancing growth requirements and opportunistic capital deployment with real-time cash constraints.
Information technology : while reviewing and assessing processes, you will integrate technology into our financial practices to help UME become more effective as an organization.
High performing team : you will lead a strong team of long-tenured accounting staff.
Strategic planning : as the company’s finance leader, you will have the mandate to integrate long-term thinking into UME’s financial management practices, ensuring soundness and scalability is part of our ethos.
