The 4th Class Power Engineer / Maintenance performs trades duties approaching the journeyman level in a variety of trades areas such as HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and welding.

Performs maintenance and repair duties related to buildings and equipment and performs mechanical and electrical repairs to plant systems such as heating, air handling units.

Operates, repairs and carries out preventative maintenance on the Air Handling Units, Mixing Boxes, VAVs, emergency power and other related equipment of the facility in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

May be required to process individual departmental purchase requests. Persons in this role must be prepared to act in various capacities regarding supporting maintenance in general terms.

This position may require inter-site work assignments, and working in a support role to trades personnel.

What you’ll do

Operates chillers, expansible fluid and air conditioning systems, including starting up and shutting down chillers and related pumps, fans, air compressors, pneumatic systems;

monitors and adjusts temperature control system, pressure and feed water levels; monitors and records meter and gauge readings to ensure distribution of steam / air heating to designated areas.

Monitors and adjusts physical plant and heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems by operating a variety of mechanical, pneumatic and / or electronic control systems and performing such tasks as altering systems operating parameters and schedules;

repairs and calibrates various instrumentation components of the steam and HVAC systems; maintains required documentation.

Replaces and connects actuator up to 120V.

  • Monitors and adjusts chemical treatment systems.
  • Performs preventative and demand maintenance on Heat Exchangers, ventilation and air conditioning systems by lubricating, repairing, replacing or installing equipment and / or parts such as pumps, fans, air compressors, heaters, refractories, pneumatic systems, valves, bearings and seals.
  • Tests and maintains Chillers, pumps, Cooling Towers and repairs / adjusts as required.
  • Performs water treatment analyses and add chemicals as required.
  • Maintains, repairs, replaces and extends steam piping systems including components of the physical plant such as expansion joints, valves, steam traps, strainers, heat exchangers, gauges and insulation.
  • Installs plumbing fixtures and systems such as taps, sinks, and toilets by extending and / or changing water supply and waste lines and fitting pipes to a point permitted under regulation.
  • Performs electrical and mechanical repairs to equipment such as, but not limited to, autoclaves, washers, sterilizers, and dryers by replacing and / or repairing items such as drive units, electric motors and control valves, changing seals and bearings and installing water lines and drains.

Where work is governed under specific codes requiring trades licensing this position will act under the guidance of a licensed trades person.

Performs mechanical and electrical repairs on systems such as heating, air-handling and pneumatic tube systems by disassembling equipment, replacing parts and changing seals and bearings.

Reassembles as required. Work will be under the supervision of certified trades, when the work is beyond the level of uncertified personnel.

Performs maintenance work by methods such as stripping, cleaning, lubricating, repairing, replacing and assembling castors, wheels and brakes on equipment such as mobile equipment, beds / stretchers, overhead doors, and patient lifts.

Repairs mail tube carriers and maintains records of carriers repaired or discarded.

Constructs items such as walls, doors, floors, ceilings, and windows by framing, applying finishing materials such as wood paneling, drywall, and floor coverings;

designs and constructs furniture such as desks and tables.

Performs plastering, painting and decorating by selecting and applying a variety of paint, plaster and wall coverings.

Removes and replaces coverings such as tiles, linoleum, and carpets.

  • Processes individual purchase requests by meeting with appropriate area to identify requirements, determining the source, availability and price of goods, arranging for product evaluation and demonstration, completing related forms and preparing purchase order based on request, and forwarding purchase order to appropriate authority for approval.
  • Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment, and recommends repairs and purchases as required.
  • Maintains a safe and tidy work environment by following security measures, locking up tools, materials and / or equipment, locking of doors, and turning off equipment as required and in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What you bring

Qualifications

Certificate of competency as a 4th Class Power Engineer recognized by the Province of BC. Two (2) years’ recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have : Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
