About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager & Clinical Director of the Nova Scotia Operational Stress Injury Clinic (NSOSIC), or designate, the Psychology Lead applies therapeutic and practical knowledge to clients within the NSOSIC.

It is responsible for providing clinical supervision and leadership to team members in delivering safe, effective, efficient, evidence-based, high-quality, client-centred care.

60% of this position is dedicated to the clinical care of clients.

As an integral member of the Health Services Team, the Psychology Lead participates in the planning, development and provision of services.

It fosters the functional integration of NSOSI Clinic to ensure maximum access and inter-disciplinary collaboration is achieved within a caring, client-centred environment.

The Psychology Lead exhibits sound professional judgment and initiative while working within the framework and objectives of the NSOSIC, its National Network and the Mission, Vision and Strategic Directions.

It incorporates into daily practice the Core Competencies and Values of the organization.

About the Opportunity Continued

  • Provide education to various stakeholders, i.e. VAC District offices
  • Maintain contact with the referring VAC area counsellors, RCMP, and DND in the development of treatment plans and referrals
  • Utilize OSI-supported telemental health and other distance technologies in the provision of services in outlying communities.
  • Work with the Canadian network of OSI clinics and follow the leadership of the Operational Stress Injuries National Network.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient / client safety practices, policies and procedures of the NSHA and in compliance with the VAC guidelines for OSI clinics.
  • Provide specialized psychological testing and therapy as needed and within the scope of practice.
  • Provide regular opportunities for individual consultation with psychology (and ad hoc other) staff.
  • Review / meet with Candidate Register psychologists and provide a second signature on assessments when needed.
  • Provide guidance when needed to support team members in achieving national OSI network objectives.
  • Supervise NSOSIC clinicians in standard protocols.
  • Support Operational Leadership with Psychology applicant interviews.
  • Participate in regular file administrative audits involving the Clinical Lead and Health Services Manager.
  • Chair NSOSIC Discipline / Practice groups for psychology
  • Support orientation and training for new staff.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with the manager, clinical director, and clinical team lead in determining the specific tasks and areas of focus that are priorities in the NSOSIC, providing effective and efficient care.
  • Organizes and co-facilitates client care conferences, promotes full participation in interdisciplinary team discussions and monitors the Collaborative Interprofessional Care (CIC) model as set out in the NSOSIC guidelines.
  • Actively uses and is a leader in the use of outcome monitoring (Example, CROMIS)
  • Provides clinical mentorship and coaching (not formal supervision) on an ad hoc basis, respecting the CIC model and focusing on optimizing client care
  • Assists in developing educational initiatives and provides direction and coaching / mentoring to new or less experienced clinicians.
  • Assists in developing and providing appropriate orientation activities / learning events for new staff under the direction of the manager and clinical director.
  • Review applications of students at the NSOSIC when appropriate
  • Attends service, program and team meetings as required.
  • Attend and participates in intake meetings, working collectively to decide on client assignment.
  • Records and maintains workload and other statistical data to account for careload balance by having care-specific discussions with psychology staff.
  • Participates in Psychology recruitment initiatives when needed.

About You

Recognized doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology

  • Registered or eligible for registration under the Psychologists Act of Nova Scotia
  • CPA / APA accredited internship / residency (or equivalent) in clinical psychology
  • Clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, substance use disorders, and PTSD using evidence-based approaches is an asset.
  • Training in evidence-based therapies for PTSD, depression and anxiety disorders, such as PE, CPT, EMDR, CBT, BA, MBSR, is an asset.
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary service delivery model is mandatory.
  • Experience in a military or police service environment is an asset
  • Experience with assessment of police, veterans and / or Canadian forces members with operational stress injuries, including anxiety, mood, and substance use, is an asset
  • Experience providing trauma-focused therapy an asset
  • Experience providing treatment in an outpatient community setting is an asset
  • Sensitivity to the unique needs of military / police services personnel who are experiencing service-related mental health problems
  • Knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation principles and practices
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills and ability to establish and maintain good working relations
  • Effective mentoring and clinical supervision skills to support both the academic role and the clinical practice of other team members
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

Compensation and Incentives

$51.37-$66.32 Hourly
