Sessional Instructor, Design

Opportunity

The Design Department in the Faculty of Fine Art and Communications invites applications for part-time sessional instructor appointments in Design History commencing September 3, 2024.

Candidates for this position must have demonstrated expertise in the area of visual communication design. Specifically, we are seeking candidates who have the ability to teach one or more of the following courses : DESN 110 Design Studio I (Form and Colour), DESN 120 Design Software I, DESN 220 Design Software II, DESN 131 Typography I, DESN 203 Concept Visualization,DESN 150 Image Structure and Meaning, DESN 261 Motion Graphics I, DESN 313 Information Design (course descriptions can be found here : ).

About MacEwan Design

Due to the popularity of the program, we will grow by 33% next year, from 90 first-year students to 120 first-year students.

This growth will require us to run more course sections throughout the program - which is why we are seeking sessional instructors.

• The Design Department at MacEwan University prepares students to become the creative design leaders of tomorrow. Students are immersed in the knowledge, processes, methods and skills of the discipline : the ability to research and identify problems and provide communication solutions within a given social and environmental context;
• use tools of the field to give form to their concepts while recognizing the cultural significance and meaning of them; communicate and defend solutions to team members and stakeholders;

Six years ago, the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications (FFAC) moved to the new, world-class, $200-million Allard Hall as part of MacEwan University’s main campus in downtown Edmonton.

Allard Hall includes the following dedicated design spaces : three design studios, two drawing studios, three photo studios, two computer labs, four video edit suites, and a student common room.

Duties and responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following :

• Instruct students in a design studio course or courses.
• Provide learning activities that stimulate student involvement and encourage critical thinking and discussion.
• Provide concrete, timely, constructive, respectful and actionable feedback to students.

Required qualifications :

• At least 4 years of professional design experience.
• Bachelors in design or in a related field (a diploma in design can be considered where the candidate has at least 8 years of professional design experience).
• An understanding of design practice, process, methods, principles, visual elements, and genres.
• Demonstrated commitment and initiative towards principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.
