Overview
The Gas Engineering Technician is responsible for drafting proposed and as‑built natural gas plans (including developing bills of materials for engineering designs), drafting other drawings to support material specifications and work instructions, preparing and maintaining records and GIS asset information, collaborating on approval applications to various parties, maintaining the welding performance management system, updating the gas distribution system model, and responding to information inquiries. The goal is to deliver documentation that meets Kitchener Utilities requirements and deadlines. The Gas Engineering Technician must be proficient in AutoCAD, collaborate with team members, and manage time effectively to prepare plans and records efficiently and meet deadlines.
(Temporary Full Time for approximately 18 Months)
Responsibilities
Collect base information related to utilities, property boundaries, and existing and proposed "plan and profiles" from consultants for new development and road reconstruction projects. Consolidate base information and clean up consultant prepared CAD drawing to create CAD base drawing.
Prepare detailed engineering designs for new and replacement gas main and service projects in AutoCAD Map (typical) or AutoCAD Civil 3D (occasionally if profile required), based on established design principles and input from engineers, project managers and technologists / inspectors. Draft and revise drawings in accordance with comments from engineers, project managers, technologists / inspectors, and external consultants.Edit design drawings to meet requirements of requests for approval from various parties, such as Region of Waterloo municipal consent, railway permits, Grand River Conservation Area permits, Ministry of Transportation Ontario permits, and Hydro One easements.o Prepare standard drawings for procedures and work instructions based on input from engineers, technologists, quality management specialists, and manufacturers / suppliers.o Determine bill of materials for engineering designs and standard drawings. Communicate with warehouse personnel to ensure materials are available for construction.o Prepare "as‑built" drawings in AutoCAD Map (typical) or AutoCAD Civil 3D (occasionally if profile required), based on input from technologists / inspectors.Maintaining RecordsPrepare and maintain record drawings and GIS asset information.
Maintains welding performance management system.Distribution System ModelingUpdate the gas distribution system model to include new and replacement infrastructure.
Technical KnowledgePossess working knowledge and experience in drafting civil pipeline infrastructure.
Communication with Project TeamEffectively communicate with the project team comprising staff, external agencies, consultants and contractors.
Attend committees and working groups as required to provide expertise and experience.Performs other related duties as assigned.Education
Minimum 3-year degree or diploma in a related field, including courses in computer‑aided drafting.Experience
