Job description

We are searching for an enthusiastic highly motivated individual who is very organized has experience in clinical research and exceptional interpersonal skills and who will enjoy collaborating and conducting research in a stimulating academic mental health care setting. This individual will provide coordination of clinical trials and quality improvement research projects supporting the research team within the Suicide Prevention Research Collaborative.

Previous experience in the co-ordination of psychiatric research studies is essential and experience in recruiting patients with mental health disorders and communicating with patients and/or their family members within inpatient psychiatric settings is highly desirable. The successful applicant will coordinate and support several research trials simultaneously and will screen and enroll participants implement protocolized assessments assist with regulatory documentation and collect enter and analyze study data. The research coordinator must have experience with Microsoft Office and be proficient with all its component applications (MS Word PowerPoint Excel).

Summary of Duties (not meant to be all encompassing)

  • The overall efficient day-to-day management of assigned research projects including clinical implementation and maintenance of operational documentation.
  • Screening patients for eligibility in all applicable critical care areas (including the ED and other hospital wards where applicable).
  • Communication with participants and substitute decision makers to obtain informed consent for participation in research studies.
  • Efficient and accurate data collection and management in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice TCPS2 and local regulations.
  • Ensure adherence to study protocols and to identify evaluate and rectify problems.
  • Work with the study teams Principal Investigators and clinical collaborators to ensure that the study is meeting enrollment targets.
  • Carry out the study while adhering to legislation and hospital policies governing privacy and data security related to research.
  • Handle and process biological specimens in accordance with the study lab manual study protocol infection prevention and control guidelines WHMIS standards and Transportation of Dangerous Goods guidance.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to policies and procedures of various regulatory bodies and agencies guiding research projects and ability to interpret regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Coordination of any necessary audit processes and quality improvement
  • Liaise with each studys project manager Principal investigator and data manager as required regarding adherence to the protocol guidelines data protection and ethics.
  • Provision of regular and ad hoc reports and updates both written and verbal to all study participants and sponsors.
  • Support with departmental ethics applications including assistance with submissions departmental reports and audit responses.
  • Provide clinical in-services and ongoing educational support to clinical collaborators in areas impacted by each study.
  • Participate in review of manuscripts where appropriate. Ability to synthesize study results into draft manuscripts for publication is an asset.
  • Participate in presentation of research protocols and results where appropriate.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Degree in a Health Sciences discipline plus 3-5 years of recent related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters Degree preferred.
  • Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP/CCRA) preferred along with Canadian Critical Care Trials Group (CCCTG) membership
  • Experience in and or demonstrated knowledge of critical care is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ICH Good Clinical Practice PHIPA FDA and Health Canada regulations and training in Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • Ability to handle and process biological specimens (for example blood and urine swabs)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Strong ability to coordinate multiple studies perform concurrent tasks and work under time constraints
  • Excellent organizational capabilities
  • Compassion in communicating with families in difficult situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative and accuracy in a professional and courteous manner
  • An excellent understanding of clinical research ethics (i.e. informed consent process patient recruitment)
  • Ability to utilize a hospitals electronic patient record system and accurately retrieve data as it applies to the CRF
