Position Summary
Registered Orthopaedic Technologist Senior, Orthopaedic & Plastic Clinic :
The Senior Orthopaedic Technologist is recognized as having advanced understanding, through experience, about anatomical structures, devices, and techniques. The Senior Orthopaedic Technologist is able to demonstrate leadership skills in the areas of problem solving, mentoring, teaching and in the In-Charge role. Functions under the direction of an Orthopaedic or Plastic Surgeon
On a practical level, you will
- Maintain certification through continuing education programs as established by the C.S.O.T.
- Performing interventions focused on the following areas :
splint / cast and dressings / bandages application; windowing / wedging casts; trimming, bi-valving casts, bandages and splints; removal / repair / re-enforce casts; removal of sutures / wires / pins / external fixators; application of principles of surgical asepsis; preparing for minor surgical procedures application; setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures; and adjusting and removing orthopaedic devices.
Able to assist with fracture reductions
Perform and participate in a comprehensive assessment of patients’ conditions and develop an orthopaedic care plan in collaboration with the family and the health care team.Assess, re-evaluate and revise the orthopedic plan based on patient condition.Provide and co-develop education related to orthopedic treatments and discharge instructions / follow-up care to patients and families (e.g. cast care, brace and appliance application, wound care, osteoporosis, injections, crutch use, etc).Keeping work area, equipment and supplies hazard free and reporting any health and safety concerns appropriately and in a timely manner.Assist in technical advice and care to clinic and other units / departments on orthopaedic and plastic devices / equipment including wound careFacilitate the daily operations of the Orthopedics & Plastics Clinic and lead the coordination of Orthopedic Surgeon Clinics.Be an active participant in in quality improvement initiativesActively participate in orientation and onboarding of new staff within the Orthopedics & Plastics Clinic.Act as a subject matter expert and resource to clinic staff in managing clinical flow and solving complex clinical challenges.Seeking learning opportunities to advance growth and development of Orthopaedic Technologist within hospital and communicate with them in this regardMonitors practice of staff to ensure that they are practicing in accordance with NYGH and CSOT practice standards and guidelinesManage orthopedic supplies and devices inventory by adjusting quotas, ordering supplies, and coordinating repairs or replacements. Ensure equipment is safe, stocked, and used efficiently.Performs other duties as assignedQualifications
High school diploma and Completion of an Orthopaedic Technologist training program recognized by the C.S.O.T. or Apprenticeship program and sponsorship by an orthopaedic physicianRegistered with the C.S.O.T. for a minimum of 5 (five) years with Advanced Registered Orthopaedic Technologist designationStrong team-building, communication, and conflict resolution skills; effective under high-stress conditionsActive contributor to unit and hospital committees with a solid understanding of institutional policies and proceduresProficiency in applying, adjusting, and removing a wide range of orthopaedic devices, including complex casting required (e.g., total contact, patellar tendon bearing, long arm / leg casts, moldings, wedging)Eight years full-time experience in providing direct care to orthopedic patients in advanced roleAdvanced knowledge of anatomy, orthopaedic conditions, and the theory and application of skin, skeletal, and manual tractionAdvanced knowledge of theory and application of skin, skeletal and manual tractionSkilled in aseptic technique for dressing changes, suture / staple / pin / wire removal, and surgical field setupWhat We Offer
