External Req. Title: Assistant Professor - Virology

The Department of Molecular Genetics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto (St. George campus) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Virology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2027.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Virology/Microbiology/Molecular Biology or a related discipline at the time of appointment, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Relevant postdoctoral experience or equivalent is expected. Candidates must provide strong evidence of research excellence of an internationally competitive calibre in the broad area of molecular virology or a related area as evidenced by a record of publications in leading journals in the field as well as presentations at significant conferences, the submitted research statement, accolades or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.

The successful candidate will be expected to mount an innovative, competitive and independently funded research program in the broadly defined area of molecular virology. The candidate will also be invited to become a member of the Emerging and Pandemic Infections Consortium (EPIC;epic.utoronto.ca ), a program that marshals the advanced research infrastructure and the world-renowned research and training expertise of the University and its affiliated hospital network to allow an integrated, innovative response to infectious diseases. Applicants who will complement existing departmental strengths, and those who will effectively use the University’s state-of-the-art biosafety containment level 3 facilities, are particularly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will also undertake undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities on the University’s St. George campus. Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in teaching through teaching accomplishments and via a teaching dossier (see below for an outline of the required and suggested materials to be included in the teaching dossier) as well as strong endorsements by referees.

The expected salary range is $125,000-$155,000 CADper annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant intellectual community of world‑class scholars at Canada’s leading university. The Department of Molecular Genetics holds a leadership position in Canada and internationally as a premier venue for biomedical and life sciences research and education. The Department of Molecular Genetics’ deep and rich tradition of teaching and research excellence dates back to 1969. The Department comprises over 100 faculty members whose research spans the frontiers of biological research and discovery from Cellular and Molecular Structure and Function; Computational and Systems Biology; Functional Genomics and Proteomics; Genetic Models of Development and Disease; Molecular Medicine and Human Genetics; and Molecular Microbiology and Infectious Disease. The Department offers research‑intensive graduate programs, professional programs in Medical Genomics and Genetic Counselling, and undergraduate programs in both Genetics and Microbiology that provide the opportunity for involvement in research and exposure to the most current techniques.

For more information on the Department of Molecular Genetics, visit www.moleculargenetics.utoronto.ca . The Department Molecular Genetics is located at 1 King’s College Circle, MSB 4396, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1A8 CANADA.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applicants must submit a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a research statement outlining current and future research interests; and a teaching dossier. The teaching dossier should include a teaching statement, along with any of the following: sample course materials, teaching evaluations, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching‑related activities. Teaching‑related activities include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellence in conference presentations or posters.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each referee within 48 hours after an application is submitted. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that referees submit recent letters (on letterhead, dated and signed) by the closing date. More details on the automatic reference letter collection, including timelines, are available in the candidate FAQ.

Submission guidelines can be found at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Yvonne Kenny atmogen.chair@utoronto.ca.

All application materials, including recent reference letters, must be received by March 16, 2026.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
