JUNIOR BIOLOGIST
Location: Kelowna, BC & Surrey, BC
WHO WE ARE
PRI is an engineering, environment, and natural resource consulting company. We are committed to delivering quality services to our valued clients. Our incredible team of engineers, environmental scientists, and resource professionals work together to provide clients with a synergistic offering of services unique to the industry. We are built on the foundation of our core values: commitment to our people, our relationships, our community, and our environment.
THE OPPORTUNITY
PRI is seeking a Junior Biologist to join our growing Environmental Group. The position will be based in Kelowna or Surrey to support our expanding workload in BC. This is an entry-level opportunity ideal for a recent graduate who is eager to develop their skills in terrestrial and wildlife ecology within a dynamic consulting environment.
This role is perfect for someone who is enthusiastic about fieldwork, keen to learn from experienced professionals, and motivated to contribute to meaningful environmental projects. The position involves a combination of field and office work, with occasional travel. You will work alongside senior biologists and environmental scientists on a diverse range of projects spanning industrial sectors including forestry, renewable energy, municipal, land development, transportation, and mining.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist with field studies related to terrestrial ecosystems and wildlife, including species-at-risk surveys, habitat assessments, and biodiversity monitoring, under the guidance of senior staff
• Collect, record, and organize field data accurately, including completing field logs, daily reports, and chain of custody documentation
• Support analysis and interpretation of ecological data under senior biologist supervision
• Assist in the preparation of technical reports, letters, and memoranda in compliance with provincial and federal environmental legislation
• Contribute to literature reviews, historical air photo interpretation, terrain mapping, and desktop research tasks
• Support permitting and environmental assessment activities as directed
• Liaise with project team members and contribute to multi-disciplinary deliverables
• Participate in required corporate operations and administrative activities in a timely manner
• Follow and actively support the company's Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies at all times
• Complete required safety documentation including tailgate meetings and hazard assessments
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field, completed within the last two years
• Eligibility to register as a Biologist-in-Training (B.I.T.) or College Member with the BC College of Applied Biologists (BCCAB) — the company will support this process; registration not required to apply
• No prior consulting experience required — a genuine interest in terrestrial ecology and a willingness to learn in a field environment is what matters most
• Valid BC Class 5 driver's licence (or equivalent) and access to a vehicle
• Physical ability to perform field work in varied terrain and weather conditions year-round
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate field data collection and documentation
• Ability to take direction, work effectively as part of a team, and ask questions
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; basic technical writing ability
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
• Willingness to travel for fieldwork, including overnight stays at remote locations as needed
• A safety-oriented attitude
Assets (Not Required)
• Familiarity with ArcGIS, GPS data collection, or wildlife survey methodologies through academic coursework, co-op, or volunteer experience
• Exposure to BC species-at-risk, Riparian Areas Regulation, or Environmental Assessment Office processes
• First Aid certification (OFA Level 1 or higher) — training can be provided
• WHMIS 2015 and basic field safety training
