About SafelyYou
SafelyYou’s passionate mission is to empower safer, more person-centered care across senior living through world-leading AI, industry-changing hardware, and remote expert clinicians, significantly improving outcomes for residents while increasing peace of mind for families and reducing costs for communities.
Originating in 2015 as the doctoral research of CEO George Netscher—and inspired by his own family's experience with Alzheimer's disease—SafelyYou was spun out of UC Berkeley’s Artificial Intelligence Research Lab, one of the top five AI research groups in the world. And today, our company is solving critical challenges in senior living, from resident falls and ER visits to staffing concerns, length of stay, and NOI. All helping ensure that communities can focus on improved care for residents while still reaching their financial goals.
SafelyYou is one of five most innovative fall technologies referenced in the Senate Falls Report (2019), a winner of the McKnight’s Tech Partner of the Year, and has been named to Fortune’s Impact 20 list, which recognizes companies making people’s lives better through innovation.
Your Role at SafelyYou
We are hiring a Director of AI to lead our computer vision efforts focused on care and safety in senior living environments. This role is responsible for building and operating AI systems that run in production, at scale, and in real-world conditions, not just in research settings.
Our platform uses smart cameras deployed in the field and operates on a large, well-established annotated dataset. Today, these systems monitor thousands of residents every day for fall detection, wellness signals, and care-related insights. The Director of AI will be accountable for turning that data and infrastructure into reliable, measurable outcomes.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will manage a team of researchers and engineers, guide technical direction, and ensure work moves efficiently from experimentation to deployed services.
Key Responsibilities :
Cross-Functional Work
Partner with the Product team to align AI capabilities with customer and care requirements.
Work with Hardware and Systems teams on camera capabilities, sensor constraints, and edge inference considerations.
Collaborate with Cloud and Platform teams to support scalable, observable AI services.
Communicate clearly with leadership on progress, risks, and technical tradeoffs.
Technical Leadership
Partner closely with the CTO to ensure AI development is integrated into broader, cross-functional strategic initiatives across Product, Engineering, Data, and Operations teams.
Own the definition and prioritization of AI capabilities in partnership with Product, Clinical, and Operations teams.
Translate product requirements and real-world care needs into clear technical direction for the AI team.
Coordinate work across AI, Product, Hardware, Cloud, and Data teams to ensure dependencies are understood and addressed early.
Ensure alignment on scope, success criteria, and delivery expectations before work begins.
Communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Balance short-term product needs with longer-term platform and model improvements.
Help teams resolve ambiguity when requirements, data, or constraints are incomplete.
Research to Production
Lead teams in moving work from research and prototyping into stable, production-ready services.
Establish clear expectations and processes around model validation, testing, release, and post-deployment monitoring.
Own performance tracking in the field, including error analysis, drift detection, and iteration based on real-world feedback.
Put mechanisms in place to capture production feedback (metrics, errors, edge cases) and incorporate it into future research and model iteration.
Team Management
Manage and grow a team of AI researchers, applied ML scientists, and engineers.
Provide clear goals, technical guidance, and regular feedback.
Create an environment where high standards, accountability, and learning are expected.
Data Strategy and Execution
Own execution of the data strategy supporting model development and improvement.
Oversee annotation workflows, data quality checks, and dataset versioning.
Work closely with Operations and domain experts to maintain labeling accuracy and consistency through vendor selection and tools selection.
The Ideal Candidate :
Required
Proven experience building and deploying computer vision or machine learning systems in production environments.
Experience leading teams that include both researchers and engineers.
Deep understanding of modern deep learning approaches and applied ML workflows.
Demonstrated ownership of large datasets and the processes around labeling, quality, and iteration.
Preferred
Experience with edge or embedded inference.
Background in healthcare, safety-critical systems, or other regulated environments.
Familiarity with human activity recognition, video analytics, or behavior modeling at scale.
Experience operating AI systems over long time horizons, with ongoing performance monitoring and improvement.
