About Us

Building and maintaining our provincial highway infrastructure is no small job.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries.

The Vehicle Transportation Inspection (VTI) Division of DPW is responsible for inspection and compliance of all vehicles that use our highways.

We inspire public confidence in the public passenger transportation service as well as the commercial trucking industry through education, inspection, and enforcement as related to the Acts and Regulations that pertain to all the road users in our province.

About Our Opportunity

As the Senior Director of Vehicle Transportation Inspection (VTI), you lead the vehicle inspection and compliance divisions in the Province.

The decisions you make directly impact the safe and efficient movement of people and goods under the jurisdiction of the various regulations and acts which guide the industry.

We count on your leadership and technical expertise to guide the Motor Carrier, Vehicle Compliance, Motor Vehicle Inspection, National Safety Code (NSC) Audit, and the VTI training division at DPW.

Your leadership will aid in increasing the safety of road users and protect the highway infrastructure of Nova Scotia.

You are key in providing the strategic orientation, direction and vision for the five Vehicle Transportation Inspection (VTI) divisions at (DPW).

You will forge partnerships and relationships with senior government, industry officials, and jurisdictional representatives to enhance and promote harmonization and education.

You will provide extensive technical advice and recommendations on all matters relating to commercial vehicle, passenger vehicle and public passenger transportation industry in Nova Scotia;

including recommendations on amendments to legislation, regulations and standards.

You are critical in building a strong and cohesive team, as well as inspire innovation and change in the industry. You will also aid the development of the annual operational / business plan, strategic goals, and annual budgets.

As the Senior Director, you represent the Province of Nova Scotia's interests by serving on and contributing to various provincial and federal boards, committees and national associations.

Qualifications and Experience

You have a high degree of diplomacy and an understanding of the needs of the public passenger, passenger and commercial vehicle industry, along with progressive leadership experience.

You must be familiar with the various acts and regulations that guide the industry including the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, Public Highways Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and Motor Carrier Act.

Travel throughout the province is required; as such you must have a valid driver’s license and ability to travel.

Strong critical thinking and analytical skills are essential to your success as you often balance multi-dimensional problems involving diverse stakeholders.

You must promote strong relationships and foster collaboration with other Provinces to identify benefits and opportunities to advance the industry.

You are known for your creativity and innovative ways of thinking to lead change and develop strategies in the industry.

The Government of Nova Scotia has adopted the LEADS Leadership Framework. During the interview, candidates will be expected to express how they have demonstrated the key behaviours and capabilities required to effectively lead in a caring and inclusive environment.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools : written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Your normal work week is 40 hours / week, 8 hours / day.

The majority of your work is conducted in an office environment. There is travel required within the Province, in various weather conditions.

There is a requirement to travel outside the Province.

There is pressure to meet deadlines while juggling a diverse number of projects that require ongoing planning / revising.

You must be able to manage stressful, complex situations and balance many different issues and considerations. Work is often subject to extensive scrutiny and criticism by the public and by the diverse communities served.

Additional Information

The primary work location can be negotiated; however, it should be located near our Compliance Station locations (Halifax / Truro / Amherst / Port Hawkesbury).

The work location is also based on office availability.

Salary Range : $4,055.86 - $5,069.81 Bi-Weekly
