The Opportunity
The Grounds Lead Hand provides daily direction to the Grounds staff and Equipment Operators and performs varied manual and detailed equipment operation in landscape maintenance and construction, snow removal, and grounds clean up.
Roles and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Maintenance, below are some key accountabilities :
- Meet with the Manager, Facilities Maintenance to determine projects and priorities.
- Provide daily direction to the Grounds staff and Equipment Operators on assignments, ensuring that work is completed in a timely and complete matter, and providing guidance and mentoring to staff when required.
- Perform moderately complex tasks, and varied manual and detailed equipment operation in landscape maintenance, snow removal, clean up and landscape construction.
- Perform winter-related duties, ensuring safe conditions on and around the campus, as well as making decisions regarding these duties in the absence of the Manager, Facilities Maintenance.
- Operate light to heavy equipment including tractors, skid-steers, front end loaders and specialized equipment for various reasons such as spraying, snow removal, sanding and sweeping sidewalks and parking lots, lawn mowing, bed digging, planting and / or transplanting of trees and shrubs or the removal of.
- Daily cleaning of the campus, chainsaw operation, signage installation, events set up and take down, as well as lawn, bed and tree maintenance.
- Perform landscaping work including leveling and preparing grounds for seeding, sodding and planting, moving soil and gravel, constructing fences, pouring concrete and building retaining walls.
- Assist other trades within Physical Facilities, other departments throughout the campus as well as clientele needs regarding general labour requirements.
- Perform minor repairs and service (e.g. oil changes and tune ups) on mobile equipment, machinery and on the irrigation system.
- Train staff in the safe use of equipment such as loaders, bobcats and various related tools and equipment.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
Minimum of two years’ professional groundskeeping / landscaping experienceGood working knowledge of grounds maintenance, general horticultural practices, irrigation, landscape constructionKnowledge of the tools, equipment, and machinery operation, service, and repair common in the landscape fieldClass “5” Alberta driver’s licenseExperienced operator of skid steer loaders and snow plows is an assetPhysically capable of performing strenuous work in all types of weather conditionsSpecial Requirements
There are specific clothing requirements for this position.This position is required to be outdoors for extended periods of time, often in inclement weather.During the snow removal season, this position will be outdoors performing manual snow removal all day.Due to changing weather conditions, the Grounds Lead Hand may be requested to work non-scheduled days as required to ensure the safety of people on Banff Centre grounds.Employment Terms and Benefits
