About The Job :

The Infection Prevention and Control Professional (ICP) is responsible for the coordination, education and evaluation of programs related to Infection Prevention and Control directed toward the provision of high-quality patient care using a standardized and consistent provincial approach.

This position provides leadership and coordination of activities which contribute to prevention and control of nosocomial, community acquired, and occupational infections for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers.

This individual develops and maintains a high level of clinical competency. This position reports to the Provincial Infection Prevention and Control Manager.

Duties include but are not limited to :

  • Monitoring, consulting, and involvement in the care plan of patients in the control / prevention of the spread of suspected or diagnosed healthcare or community acquired infections;
  • collaborating with and providing liaison to the Provincial Infection Prevention and Control program; reporting communicable diseases and related conditions, and assisting with the prevention and control of infectious diseases;
  • collaborating to ensure a comprehensive ICP surveillance approach is utilized through identifying and monitoring nosocomial infections, according to approved methods including target surveillance of specific infection rates that support identified provincial patient safety initiatives;
  • investigating and assisting in identifying and tracing possible sources of infection and initiating / proposing preventative and corrective measures;
  • providing provincially standardized education and training to health care workers, patients and families using provincial in-service education resources for infection prevention and control procedures and techniques for staff including orientation for all new employees;
  • providing instruction, consultation, and guidance concerning IPAC techniques and practices in accordance to provincial practices
  • collaborating in the development and revision of written provincial policies and procedures, treatment techniques and work procedures, which impact on infection prevention and control
  • participating in the activities of the Provincial Infection Prevention and Control Committees by attending meetings, providing information and preparing reports as required;
  • acting as a resource to other health care facilities as requested;
  • may be required to travel provincially based on operational requirements
  • other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI and Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and equivalent of four (4) complete years as a practicing Registered Nurse
  • Must possess a high level of professionalism, demonstrated leadership abilities and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Certification from an IPAC Canada recognized Infection Control Course or willingness to complete a recognized course within 24 months from hire is required
  • Willingness to undertake programs of continuing study which are identified by the employer as relating to the role and function of the ICP Nurse is required.

  • Proficiency in use of computers, word processing and database is required.
  • Experience and training in Adult Education is required.
  • A good previous work and attendance record.

Other Qualifications :

  • Experience and / or education in Occupational Health Nursing would be considered an asset.
  • Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
