Your opportunity :
As the Apprentice Machinist, will have the opportunity to work with a team of highly skilled machinists and researchers, and contribute to the cutting edge research and teaching priorities within the Department of Chemistry .
Reporting to the Manager of Mechatronic Services, the Apprentice Machinist designs, fabricates, installs, maintainsand repairs unique scientific devices, components and precision instruments for research purposes and undergraduate teaching.
The incumbent will work within the fully equipped machine shop.
Your responsibilities will include :
- Designing, modifying and fabricating custom machine parts
- Applying established standards when operating fabrication equipment
- Verifying the accuracy of design requirements
- Handling minor equipment repairs
- Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility
- Checking to ensure equipment is in working order
- Verifying inventory
- Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards
Essential Qualifications :
- College Diploma (2 years) in Aerospace Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, General Machinist, Tool and Die Maker or Mould Maker or acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education.
- Minimum three years of recent and relevant experience in any combination of machining, tool and die making, or mould making.
This might have been gained through a role in co-operative education, or summer employment in a fabrication shop / facility.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with manual and powered / energized resources.
- Demonstrated general machinist skills in one of the following areas : Milling or Turning.
- Ability to work from mechanical drawings, client specifications, and oral or written instructions.
- Ability to exercise judgement in determining the techniques and methods used.
- Basic G-Code programming knowledge and skills, or willingness to learn.
- Must have basic machinist tools and bench style tool box.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial work environment.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills (verbal and written), and ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, including students, faculty, staff.
- Demonstrated interest in broadening knowledge in techniques / tools and materials and a motivated learner.

USW Pay Band 07 $59,172. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $75,673. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation / Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
