Contract Academic Staff Course Based / Laboratory Instructor
The Department of Chemistry is seeking Contract Academic Staff to teach the following two or four credit hour lab(s) during the Fall (2024) and Winter (2025) semesters.
The instructor(s) will be responsible for in-person laboratory delivery including the preparation of all consumables, samples, solutions, and equipment as part of laboratory preparation / set-up and clean-up, laboratory safety, supervision of laboratory markers (in 261, 271, 363, and 373), and coordination with the course instructor regarding the overall laboratory assessment.
Qualified candidates must possess strong teaching, communication and organizational skills, and demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness.
18 : 261 Organic Chemistry I (4 credit hour)
Fall term 1 : 40pm-5 : 30pm and 6 : 40-10 : 30pm Wednesday
Laboratory experiments include recrystallization, distillation, Separation of acidic, basic, and neutral compounds using liquid-liquid extraction, thin layer chromatography, and stereochemistry.
18 : 271 Organic Chemistry II (4 credit hour)
Winter term 1 : 40pm-5 : 30pm and 6 : 40-10 : 30pm Wednesday
Laboratory experiments include substitution reactions, Diels-Alder reaction, Grignard reaction, reduction of carbonyl compounds using hydrides and esterification reactions.
18 : 363 Introductory Biochemistry (4 credit hour)
Fall term 1 : 40pm-5 : 30pm Thursday
1 : 40pm-5 : 30pm Friday
Laboratory experiments include basic plasmid handling such as transformation, mini-prep plasmid DNA extraction, restriction enzyme digestion, and DNA electrophoresis;
basic bioinformatic protein analysis such as BLASTp, alignments, and protein structure visualization and analysis; protein lysate preparation, column / pull-down affinity-purification, SDS-PAGE and western blot analysis.
18 : 373 Intermediary Metabolism & Human Metabolic Disorders (4 credit hour)
Winter term 1 : 40pm-5 : 30pm Thursday
1 : 40pm-5 : 30pm Friday
Laboratory experiments include basic electron transport chain monitoring of photosynthesis, instruction and supervision on experimental design, and instruction and supervision of a major written literature review and oral presentations.
18 : 471 Natural Product Synthesis (2 credit hour)
Fall term 1 : 40pm-5 : 30pm Tuesday
Laboratory includes a multistep synthesis of a complex target molecule. Techniques and skills required to successfully complete the laboratory include : working under inert atmosphere under anhydrous conditions, column chromatography, thin layer chromatography, liquid-liquid extraction and 1H NMR analysis.
Qualifications : Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in the subject area, applicants with a BSc and relevant experience will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

Salary : $6901 / 3 credit hour course
