Purpose

Reporting to the Mobile Maintenance Team Leaders, the Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice minimizes downtime and ensures optimum equipment effectiveness through proactive maintenance practices.

This position is responsible for preserving the condition of all heavy equipment. This includes various tasks but is not limited to troubleshooting, lubrication, inspections and component replacement and rebuild.

Responsibilities include :

  • Remain and continue to practice workplace procedures and workplace protocols.
  • Speak up for health and safety, identify, report and address risks.
  • Report to work physically fit.
  • Complete safety training and certification as required by site and departmental procedure.
  • Wear PPE at all time while in Maintenance environment.
  • Follow operating procedures and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Competent on mine site locations and ability to identify hazards.
  • Provide maintenance support, repairs and modifications to all site Heavy Duty components, facilities and equipment both on surface and underground to ensure reliable operation.
  • Ensure work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner and provide input directed at improving the safety, efficiency and overall effectiveness of the Heavy Duty Mechanic department
  • Troubleshooting, cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, inspecting, repairing, component replacement & rebuild, welding, fabrication and low voltage electrical repairs of heavy equipment.
  • Participate in maintenance.
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn.
  • Increase efficiency and personal productivity.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.
  • Follow all procedures related to environmental sustainability.
  • Report environmental incidents and support investigations.
  • Treat all colleagues, business partners and other stakeholders with respect.
  • Participate in capability training per departmental procedure.
  • Perform employee performance assessments per company and site requirements.

The ideal candidate will possess the following education, experience and competencies :

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Will be required to attend and successfully complete a 9000 hour apprenticeship which includes 3 school term sessions consisting of ten (10) weeks for each session taking approximately 5 years to complete
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 55 lbs.
  • Ability to constantly reach above and at-shoulder level.
  • Ability to constantly work in a stooping / crouching position.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in an underground environment.
  • Ability to perform in a self-directed manner within a fast paced, team environment.
  • Experience in a mining environment is an asset.
  • Welding certification or experience is an asset

Working Conditions

The schedule for this position will consist of 14 days on and 14 days off, 12 hours per day.
