The Student Experience and Learning Librarian plays a vital role in connecting students with library resources and services through strategic programming, inclusive instructional design, and collaborative partnerships across campus. This position brings together three interconnected areas—student engagement and outreach, digital learning and instructional design, and accessibility coordination—to create meaningful, equitable learning experiences that support student success.

Working collaboratively with library colleagues, faculty, and campus partners, the librarian designs and delivers innovative programming (from educational workshops to wellness initiatives), creates accessible instructional content for diverse learning contexts, and ensures library services meet the needs of all students. This is an opportunity to shape how students experience and engage with the library during a transformative period in their academic journey.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Outreach and Engagement

  • Design and implement strategic programming that connects students with library resources, including signature events, wellness initiatives (de‑stress programming, therapy animals), and campus‑wide student success activities
  • Coordinate engagement efforts across library units, collaborating with librarians and staff to align and enhance existing initiatives
  • Serve as the library's primary liaison for institution‑wide student engagement, including orientation, equity initiatives, and collaborative campus events
  • Build and sustain partnerships with academic departments, student organizations, and campus services to create coordinated, high‑impact programming
  • Develop assessment frameworks to evaluate program effectiveness and demonstrate impact

Digital Learning and Instructional Design

  • Create and maintain digital instructional content—including online modules, videos, research guides, and workshop materials—for in‑person and virtual learning environments
  • Design and deliver information literacy instruction on foundational research skills, including research strategies, source evaluation, and citation management
  • Partner with liaison librarians and academic departments to develop subject‑specific learning objects and integrate library resources into curricular and co‑curricular programs
  • Lead initiatives to enhance the usability, accessibility, inclusivity, and pedagogical effectiveness of library instructional materials
  • Analyze usage data and feedback to drive continuous improvement and demonstrate educational outcomes
  • Accessibility

  • Serve as the library's accessibility coordinator, ensuring all services, resources, and programming meet or exceed accessibility standards (AODA, WCAG 2.1)
  • Coordinate accessibility initiatives across library operations, including digital content, physical spaces, programming, and instructional materials
  • Collaborate with Student Accessibility Services and campus partners to embed accessibility into library planning and service delivery
  • Serve as primary contact for library accessibility inquiries and alternate format requests
  • Conduct accessibility audits and provide guidance to ensure equitable access for all users
  • Professional Practice

  • Maintain currency with emerging education technologies, AI applications, accessibility tools, and evolving best practices in academic librarianship
  • Engage in consortial activities and professional networks related to information literacy, digital pedagogies, and accessibility
  • Required Skills

  • Ability to design, coordinate, and assess student engagement programming and outreach initiatives
  • Instructional design and content creation skills for diverse learning contexts and audiences
  • Teaching and presentation skills across varied formats, including in‑person, virtual, synchronous, and asynchronous delivery
  • Strong collaboration and partnership development skills with library colleagues and campus stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated commitment to advocating for and implementing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility principles
  • Self‑directed work style with strong project management and organizational skills
  • Required Knowledge

  • Current trends and best practices in student engagement, outreach, and academic librarianship
  • Current and emerging technologies and their application to library outreach, engagement, and instructional delivery
  • Learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, D2L) and integration strategies for library resources
  • Accessibility standards and legislation (e.g., AODA, WCAG 2.1) and their practical application to library services and content
  • Instructional design principles and pedagogical best practices for information literacy instruction
  • Current issues and trends in higher education, student success initiatives, and academic libraries
  • Required Education

  • Completion of an ALA‑Accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies, or equivalent
  • Verification of academic credentials may be required
  • Required Experience
