UBC Investment Management Inc. (UBCIM) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of British Columbia, providing professional investment management for the UBC Endowment Fund, Staff Pension Plan and other UBC-related funds.
The funds are invested globally across all major public and private asset classes and in aggregate value exceed $6.1 billion.
UBCIM is seeking a new team member to enhance its manager selection and monitoring function to support the growth in assets under management and increasing sophistication of our investment process.

The Senior Investment Analyst will be responsible for :
Manager Research & Sourcing
- Conduct research on investment strategies across UBCIM’s investment programs (Equities, Fixed Income, Real Assets and Absolute Return) and identify high-potential external investment managers.
- Meet with prospective investment managers to support the manager selection team's sourcing processes, taking accurate and detailed notes to capture key discussion points and summarizing for internal reference and decision-making purposes.
- Utilize our customer relationship management (CRM) system to manage the research process, track interactions and updates, and maintain up-to-date data and analytics.
Investment Analysis
- Assist in the development and implementation of asset class investment programs and underwriting the appointment and termination of external investment managers.
- Perform thorough due diligence on potential investment mandates, including historical performance analysis, return attribution, peer group comparison, risk assessment and portfolio correlation and diversification analysis.
- Evaluate existing investment programs’ portfolio construction, identifying the risk and opportunities facing each asset class, measuring and attributing historic performance, and performing stress testing and scenario analysis.
- Conduct pacing analysis to develop capital deployment plans and prepare reports and presentations summarizing findings and recommendations.
- Perform ad hoc analysis as required.
Manager Monitoring
- Manage the monitoring of UBCIM’s investment programs, meeting regularly with external managers and ensuring appropriate actions are taken as required.
- Review investment managers' regular reporting, including performance metrics, portfolio composition, risk factors, and fund deployment, communicating notable trends or issues to the team.
- Ensure the CRM is accurate, comprehensive, and serves as a centralized repository for information related to investment managers.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of working experience within the investment industry or a related business / finance field. Preference for candidates with experience at an endowment, foundation or pension fund in a Manager Research capacity.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, capable of in-depth, critical analysis, keen attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in working with and reporting on data in spreadsheet and database applications.
- Ability to balance competing priorities, work independently and manage projects
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Mathematics, Computing Science or similar quantitative discipline.
- Professional designation (or working towards) such as CFA, CAIA, CPA, etc.
- Experience using Bloomberg, Refinitiv, eVestment, Burgiss, Backstop and other investment analytical tools an asset.
Total compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications but is expected to have a base salary in the range of C$75,000 C$125,000.
