The mechanical engineer will be a key contributor to the design of electrolyzer systems, supporting the development of new products.

This role will be involved in all aspects of conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design, then support procurement, manufacturing, testing, and operation.

Activities will be both in project and on-going service and support settings. ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with engineers and designers from all disciplines (process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & controls) to develop system designs.

Develop Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).Assist with the preparation of system and component calculations including heat and mass balances (HMB).

Size, evaluate, and optimize process and mechanical equipment and system components.Work with industry codes and standards published by ASME, CSA, API, NFPA, ANSI, ASTM, ISO, IEC, and others.

Develop specifications; prepare equipment lists, valve lists, instrument lists, spare parts lists; prepare and review bill of materials (BOMs).

Review process and mechanical designs and drawings; provide feedback to designers and drafters, prepare markups.Participate in cross-functional design and safety reviews (e.

g. PHA, PSR, etc.).Develop assembly and work instructions; test and inspection plans; installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance procedures.

Support manufacturing and assembly activities as required, document feedback, revise designs, and ensure generation of as-built drawings and records.

Work with PLM and ERP systems as needed.Assist with planning and executing specific tests and studies; collect and analyze data;

prepare technical summaries and reports.Contribute to budget estimates for equipment, systems, and related items.Interface with Product Development, Project Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, Manufacturing, Operations, Business Development, and Finance departments as required.

Support in-factory and on-site testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting both in-person and remotely as required.Manage individual projects of varying size and complexity.

Work independently with general supervision, and collaboratively with team members.Host and attend meetings with team members to review progress and discuss priorities.

QualificationsMinimum of 5 years experience designing and working hands-on with process and mechanical systems containing various equipment, piping, and instrumentation.

Experience with various equipment including pumps, heat exchangers, filters, driers, compressors, fans, control valves, and relief devices.

  • Past mechanical design experience using 2D or 3D CAD (e.g. AutoCAD and / or SolidWorks).Use of simulation software for process modelling;
  • hydraulic flow calculations, and sizing of pumps, control valves, and relief devices is beneficial.Familiarity with piping and tubing systems of various types;

materials, joining methods, layout considerations, fabrication, and installation.Experience working with industry related codes and standards including ASME BPVC, ASME B31, CSA B51 & B52, API Std 520 & 521.

Involvement with process hazard analysis (PHA) methods including DFMEA and HAZOP is beneficial.Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS);

involvement in certification activities.Firsthand experience building, installing, testing, and operating equipment and systems.

Experience with high pressure gas systems is desired.Experience with electrolysis, fuel cells, and hydrogen gas, systems considered a plus.

Working knowledge of PLM and ERP systems.Excellent verbal / written communication skills in English.Good organizational and presentation skills.

Adept in MS Office applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project.Education and Certifications : Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Ontario P.Eng. license, EIT, or satisfactory prerequisites to obtain P.Eng. in near-term.Working Conditions and Physical Demand Requirements : Most work is performed in a professional office with adjoining manufacturing and testing facility.

The majority of working time will be sitting at a desk working with a computer. Periodic standing and walking around the facility.

Light to moderate travel including site visits around the GTA.Occasional on-site support.Wearing of appropriate PPE as required (e.
