ABOUT THE ROLE

The Fort McKay First Nation is seeking a motivated individual who is flexible and works well in a team environment to fill the Coordinator, Environmental and Regulatory position.

The Environmental and Regulatory Coordinator is responsible for providing technical assistance, coordination, and guidance on environmental matters, both on and off-reserve.

The incumbent will actively participate in various initiatives, collaborating with community stakeholders to integrate traditional knowledge into environmental and regulatory processes, ensuring the protection of FMFN’s rights and interests.

This is a full-time permanent position and is based on seventy-five hours bi-weekly, located in Fort McKay, AB. Some travel, evenings and weekends may be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and offer support for environmental monitoring and mitigation plans.
  • Assist in reviewing consultation submissions from industry and government, suggesting mitigations or adjustments to safeguard FMFN rights and interests.
  • Track environmental and regulatory processes significant to FMFN.
  • Support community-based monitoring programs and contribute to provincial, federal, and industry monitoring efforts.
  • Assist in Fort McKay monitoring programs and propose improvements when necessary.
  • Review and prepare technical reports and briefing notes for internal distribution and submission.
  • Participate in technical committees, multi-stakeholder groups, and government committees.
  • Aid in developing community-based environmental awareness programs and services.
  • Utilize traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and traditional land use (TLU) in environmental programs.
  • Coordinate field inspections, schedule environmental monitoring activities, and prepare reports.
  • Ensure effective two-way communication with staff and community members following established communication processes.
  • Prepare documentation for necessary permits, amendments, and licenses.
  • Support environmental and emergency response planning.
  • Foster relationships with community members, Elders, trappers, and traditional land users.
  • Assist in developing program policies and procedures, safety protocols, and training requirements.
  • Work with FMFN’s Environmental Guardian and Park Ranger Program staff to meet community-based monitoring goals.
  • Perform other duties as required.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as environmental sciences, with a focus on Natural Resource Management, biology, ecology, geography, forestry, chemistry, geochemistry, limnology, hydrology, geology, or related disciplines.
  • Standard First-Aid training is an asset.
  • Willingness to take the provided mandatory training required
  • Three years of progressive experience in environmental regulatory services.
  • Experience implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and proposing changes to environmental programs, as well as conducting fieldwork and assisting with technical reporting.
  • Familiarity with the Alberta Energy Regulator and Alberta Environment and Parks regulatory processes and policies relevant to oil sands activities.
  • Familiarity with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the new Impact Assessment process.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal and Treaty Rights.
  • Knowledge of GIS software and field mapping.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments for consecutive days, different seasons / weather, and in remote locations.
  • Ability to travel in light aircraft (e.g., floatplane, helicopter).
  • Clean Criminal Record Check is required.
  • Valid class five Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required.
  • Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is required

The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of over band members, including those of Cree and Dene heritage, with approximately members residing in the hamlet of Fort McKay a community located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray.
