The Opportunity :
The Research & Cybersecurity Computing Analyst supports TRU’s students, faculty, and researchers by delivering reliable technical solutions across three key areas :
Cybersecurity Lab : Manages and maintains the university’s cybersecurity labs, ensuring secure, seamless lab environments. Sets up and configures labs, installs and troubleshoots tools, and works with cloud solution providers.
Research Computing : Supports researchers using large‑scale computing and storage systems on campus and through national research infrastructure, including account setup, file transfers, scripting, and software deployment.
Client Services : Provides end‑user support for computing, network troubleshooting, cybersecurity, and media services. Responds to IT requests, resolves issues, configures systems, and supports AV and classroom technology.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
Cybersecurity Lab & Research Computing
The incumbent is accountable for the operation, security, and advancement of TRU’s cybersecurity and research computing environments. Key responsibilities include :
- Managing, maintaining, and monitoring physical and cloud‑based cybersecurity and research computing platforms to ensure secure, stable, and efficient operation.
- Supporting the deployment and configuration of virtual machines, containers, clusters, and workload orchestration platforms such as OpenStack and Kubernetes.
- Ensuring adherence to cybersecurity protocols, standards, and best practices across all lab and research environments.
- Supporting, maintaining, and troubleshooting HPC clusters, cloud research systems, and cybersecurity lab platforms to deliver reliable and accessible services.
- Setting up and managing virtual machines, containers, and storage environments; deploying and maintaining research software; and developing job scripts and scheduling configurations for large‑scale computing workloads.
- Collaborating with faculty and research teams to design, deliver, and enhance lab exercises, research computing infrastructure, and long‑term technical solutions, serving as the primary liaison with cloud or lab platform providers.
- Providing technical expertise and guidance on research computing architecture, infrastructure optimization, and security frameworks to support academic and research priorities.
- Delivering ITIL‑aligned technical support, including incident management, troubleshooting, system configuration, and ticket resolution.
- Configuring, administering, and troubleshooting networks, devices, and security tools; responding to cybersecurity risks and incidents; and supporting the implementation of institutional security policies.
- Maintaining comprehensive technical documentation, procedures, and knowledge base resources, contributing to continuous improvement across IT services, research computing, and lab operations.
Client Services & Support
Aligned with TRU’s commitment to responsive and service‑oriented IT delivery, the Analyst :
Provides end‑user IT support grounded in ITIL best practices, resolving hardware, software, and network‑related issues and escalating complex incidents appropriately.Offers training and guidance on information security best practices, installing and maintaining security tools, and responding to incidents.Supports campus‑wide installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of client computers, peripherals, and enterprise applications.Implements software upgrades, imaging, remote deployments, and account / access management processes.Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots audio‑visual and classroom technologies, providing support for events and coordinating with internal units and external contractors as required.The Analyst supports institutional coordination, alignment, and technical literacy through :
Acting as a liaison with cloud service providers, researchers, faculty, staff, and external vendors to support integrated, effective service delivery.Developing and maintaining manuals, documentation, and knowledge base articles to support lab operations, research computing, and IT service processes.Communicating complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, fostering understanding and ensuring informed decision‑making.Participating in campus projects related to research computing enhancement, laboratory development, cybersecurity improvements, and IT infrastructure modernization.Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computing Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline.ITIL certification.Cybersecurity or networking certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CEH, CCNA, Network+, or equivalent credentials.Experience
A minimum of five years’ relevant experience in IT services, lab management, or research computing.Demonstrated experience in high‑performance computing environments, virtualization technologies, cloud platforms, and cybersecurity tools.Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
The ideal candidate brings :
Proficiency across Linux, Windows (including Windows Server), macOS / iOS, and Android operating systems.Strong knowledge of virtualization and containerization technologies, including OpenStack, VMware, and cloud‑based virtual lab systems.Hands‑on experience with cybersecurity tools such as Kali Linux, Wireshark, Metasploit, and Nessus, with a solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, threat analysis, vulnerability assessment, and incident response.A strong foundation in networking fundamentals, including LAN / WAN configuration, network troubleshooting, and working with switches and master consoles.Proficiency with automation and configuration management frameworks such as Puppet, Ansible, Terraform, and CI / CD pipelines; expertise in scripting languages including Python, Bash, and Ruby.Experience with system imaging, deployment tools, system management utilities, policy management platforms, and automated deployment technologies (e.g., Anaconda / Kickstart, cloud‑init, Windows Deployment Services).Knowledge of teaching and learning technologies, media services devices, and control systems.Strong communication and interpersonal skills for engaging respectfully and effectively with students, faculty, researchers, vendors, and technical teams.Well‑developed organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities, with demonstrated capacity to manage projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.
Pay Band : $34.52 - $38.35 (CUPE Grade 10 (90% - 100%))
