CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR

The Candidate

The Custodial Supervisor is an excluded position which reports directly to the Director of Operations. This position performs a critical role in the delivery of custodial services to the District's schools and facilities.

The Custodial Supervisor coordinates the selection, scheduling and training programs of approximately 60 custodial staff in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

The Custodial Supervisor manages the custodial budget and District contracts for waste, recycling and snow shoveling.

The incumbent of this position is expected to maintain a level of confidentiality and professionalism in all matters pertaining to the district and its employees;

to multi-task, prioritize and manage numerous interruptions while handling a heavy workload; to perform a wide variety of supervisory tasks requiring independent judgement and action, and involving employees with diverse needs at all levels of the organization.

The ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings, is required.

The successful candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills, and demonstrated abilities to be resourceful and adaptable in a complex and changing environment, in addition to :

  • Formal training around building services maintenance, such as a diploma as a Building Services Worker;
  • Extensive successful experience (two years minimum) in the supervision of custodial staff and associated safety issues in a unionized environment;
  • Experience Managing within the public-school education sector is highly desirable;

Thorough knowledge of provincial employment, labour relations, human rights, and workplace health and safety statutes, regulations, guidelines, programs and standards.

Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, motivate, train and inspire workers in a positive manner.

Must be able to foster and encourage teamwork and cooperation with all departments.

Must be able to communicate effectively to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, co-workers, supervisors, district and school administration and contractors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Supervises and coordinates the activities of custodial staff including overtime during specialized school break and weekend- based routines and assignments.

Monitors employee absences and replacements in Custodial Services.

Reviews work requests and makes recommendations to the Director, regarding Custodial Services, the associated personnel requirements;

procures materials necessary; ensure tools and equipment are available; and establishes a schedule for personnel to complete the work within acceptable time and quality parameters.

The Custodial Supervisor is expected to communicate with employees the Employer's expectations of workplace performance and quality standards.

Administers department budget and maintains operating records, prepares and verifies staff purchasing card statements.

In collaboration with the Director, Custodial Services, research, purchases and coordinates delivery of equipment and supplies in adherence to School District Purchasing Policies.

Monitors and controls the supplies and equipment inventory and performs minor repairs and maintenance of custodial equipment.

Make presentations to employee groups or hold meetings as necessary to provide information or to outline the department's approach on a certain topic or issue (i.

e. Toolbox talks, schoolwork order program operation, project review and presentations).

Consults with school administration and provides technical advice pertaining to school needs including custodial services, equipment repairs and work scheduling.

Provides feedback to the Director of Operations regarding department staffing, job performance evaluations and staff interviews.

Provides orientation and ongoing instruction on cleaning practices, operating procedures and standards of performance and coordinates employee training (WHMIS, etc.).

Conducts routine inspections to ensure that standards of cleanliness, sanitation, use of supplies as well as safe working conditions and work habits are maintained and investigates requests and concerns raised by district personnel.

Coordinates refuse and recyclables collections from schools.

Assists in investigating accidents and completing forms relating to WCB claims.

Operates district equipment and vehicles as required.

This is a full-time 12-month position with an annual salary range for this position is $79, 771.00 to $99, 714.00 and is complemented with a generous benefits package including Municipal Pension Plan.
