Under the direction of the Vice-President, Academic, the Associate Dean, Research will work in coordination with the Vice-President to provide leadership in the University’s strategic research pursuits.
This Associate Dean will work with University leadership and faculty to promote and plan collaborative research activities of benefit to First Nations communities in Saskatchewan and beyond, including pursuing funding opportunities and establishing Centres to effectively deliver on positive research outcomes.
The Associate Dean, Research will work closely with the Associate Dean Community & Graduate Studies as well as with the Associate Dean Academic, the Executive, Program Coordinators, Directors, Coordinators, faculty, students and community stakeholders.
Key responsibilities for this position include :
- Promote the overall mission of the University with respect to First Nations cultural enhancement and First Nations self-determination initiatives through education and research in accordance with established policies and regulations of the First Nations University of Canada;
- Provide clear and concise reports on activities to the Vice-President, Academic regularly;Inform Senior Management about academic activities as appropriate;
- Provide innovative, flexible leadership to the University faculty and staff;Promote research activities and seek funding to benefit to First Nations communities in Saskatchewan and beyond, facilitating establishment of research collaborations and centres as required to advance and showcase FNUniv’s research pursuits;
- Be knowledgeable of Aboriginal customs, philosophical traditions, and ceremonial etiquette;Consult with Elders to obtain their guidance in matters pertaining to local traditional cultural values and ceremonial protocol;
- Ensure that Elders are consulted and present at all appropriate meetings.Develop relationships and maintain effective communications with the community, campuses, and academic units;
- Support the Associate Dean, Academic as required in working with Program Councils & their elected Program Coordinators to ensure the effective operation of the research activities of the University;
Required knowledge and skills :
Knowledge of best practices in academic environments; Indigenous research ethics, management, and program assessment; program planning;
and tri-council funding policies.
- Knowledge of best practices related to institutional research, including research administration, grant applications process, ethics review, and trends in Indigenous research.
- Ability to provide strategic leadership and advice to the Senior Administration regarding the academic and research mission of the University.
Education / Experience Requirements :
- Tenure-track or tenured academic staff member with a strong record in research, teaching, and service.
- This position requires a minimum of five years’ experience in academic administration at a senior level. Strong record in teaching, research, community service, work with Elders and Aboriginal communities.
