Description
The Community Ministries Assistant - Canada Summer Youth Job assists in the organization and distribution of food bank donations and thrift store operations.
Hours :
- Varied M-F 9 : 00 am 4 : 00 pm. (May include some Saturdays)
- 35 hours / week
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Consistently demonstrates empathy and concern for clients / families.
- Provides emergency food hampers to clients as directed by counselors / caseworkers or supervisor.
- May assist in the maintenance of client files and statistical records, as directed.
- Assists in the organization, maintenance, and general cleanliness of the Food Bank and / or Meal Centre, etc.
- Receives (and / or declines) and sorts / organizes non-monetary donations or purchased products following standard procedures.
- Supports the Community Meal Program
- May be responsible for ensuring safe handling of hazardous materials.
- Arranges for discarding of items that are not used as per the policy.
- May direct work of volunteers assisting in the Food Bank.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic responsibilties -Thrift Stores :
- Provide positive and courteous service to customers
- Process customer transactions at the sales counter including cash and debit / credit sales ensuring accuracy and in accordance with policies and procedures
- Accurate opening and closing of store procedures when required, including POS terminals and till
- Assist in keeping the general sales floor neat & clean and assure product displays are kept full and are tidy
- Keep stock rotated as per schedule or as directed by supervisor
- Implements store layout plans to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays; Arrange and display sales items
- Work with volunteers as assigned
- Ensure work stations for volunteers are clear and ready before they arrive
- Receives, sorts, stores and prices donations as per directions and standards
- Process donated items by unloading, sorting, packing, storing, bailing and reloading the donations
- Lifts and relocates bags and boxes to determined areas as required. Assists with heavy lifting as required
- Climbs ladders and stores seasonal product in overhead storage bins
- Separates recycling and garbage, and processes both according to the direction given, including into truck for removal
- Meets assigned daily targets; counts, weighs and record incoming and outgoing donations
- Maintains general cleanliness along with the safety and functionality of warehouse and property in accordance with all safety policies and guidelines
- May operate the forklift to move goods as necessary after sufficient training
- Shares janitorial duties in common spaces such as washroom and kitchen
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :
Education :
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
- Completion of high school.
Experience :
- Up to three (3) months of prior related experience, including, experience working with multi-barrier persons.
- The performance of the job requires a frequent number of loading / unloading trucks, handing out hampers, receiving / sorting out donated or purchased goods, and occasional computer work.
- The performance of the job requires attentive listening (empathy to clients / volunteers), and attention to occasional computer work.
- Ability to speak English, Arabic and other languages.
