Black & McDonald is currently seeking a full-time Building Operator to join our Facilities Management & Operations team in Vernon, BC! The Building Operator position will be based out of our Vernon site (Vernon Cadet Training Centre) and report to the Project Manager.
This Building Operator position will be responsible for our Department of National Defence Contract sites located throughout the BC Interior.
The Building Operator will maintain safe conditions inside and outside of the facilities, perform minor plumbing and electrical repairs, as well as use the computerized building management system.
They will conduct mechanical inspection and maintenance of equipment using FMO strategies to ensure continuing operation.
The Building Operator will use their experience and technical skills with preventive maintenance and system operations to determine service requirements and will execute any other duties or requests made to ensure contract compliance.
Duties include but are not limited to the following :
- In conjunction with the Project Manager and the team, plan and execute responsive and planned maintenance in accordance with monitor BAS or facility management system.
- Establish methods to meet work schedules and co-ordinate work activities with other subcontractors.
- Perform basic tours and log readings.
- Respond to tenant requests.
- Perform light duties such as cleaning, painting, garbage removal, snow removal, HVAC, Plumbing, and other Mechanical duties, assisting sub-contractors / technicians / mechanics, etc.
- Build and maintain customer and supplier / vendor relationships to enhance competitiveness in the industry and promote good customer relationships.
- Assist in preparing construction project budget estimates.
- Assist in planning and preparing construction schedules and milestones and monitor progress against established schedules.
- Assist in preparing contracts and negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Assist in developing and implementing quality control programs.
- Represent the company on matters such as business services.
- Prepare progress reports and issue progress schedules to clients.
- Assist in purchase of building materials.
- Review work / contracts / work-in-progress for areas of risk and correct deficiencies.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Class or 5
Class Power Engineering certification would be an asset but not required
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge and experience in building automated systems and HVAC system
- 3-5 years of work experience in mechanical / electrical industry
- Construction trade experience or certification in plumbing, HVAC, electrical is beneficial
- Previous experience working in facilities would be preferred
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Available for on call standby duties and emergency out of hours call outs
- Clean Class 5 BC Driver's License and abstract
- Available to travel throughout the BC Interior
- Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Excel, Word & Outlook
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times with fellow employees and customers
- Strong problem solving skills
- Must be able to obtain Reliability Status Federal security clearance to access military sites
Expected compensation for this role is a starting pay range between $25-$32 / hour dependent on skills and experience.
