  • Generous support for your professional growth and career development.-Recreation allowance of $800 per year.Primary Responsibilities : Under the direction of the National Executive Vice President, and as part of a team of four political assistants, the Political Assistant to the National Executive Vice President assists the National Executive Vice President, the National President and the Regional AEC Officers in the performance of their duties.

What you will bring to the table : Education / Experience

  • University degree in political science, public relations, labour studies, communications or in a related field, plus experience within a trade union.
  • Ten years of related experience define as : Experience in the labour movement and social justice; experience and high degree of skills working in union policy development including development of internal union policies as well as positions related to social economic issues, advocacy and campaigns, project management and coordination;
  • Experience in working with elected union leadership, and providing leadership within union staff structures; experience in uprooting and addressing systemic institutional racism and colonialism, advancing intersectional gender-based equity, and applying an equity lens to all union work and policies;
  • Experience with collective bargaining and representation of workers;experience in uprooting and addressing systemic institutional racism and colonialism, advancing intersectional gender-based equity, and applying an equity lens to all union work and policies;
  • Experience with collective bargaining and representation of workers; Experience in strategic planning and brining about organizational change;

Experience in union communications (internal and external).Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of PSAC and the labour movement in Canada and internationally.
  • Thorough knowledge of intersectional equity principles, including a comprehensive knowledge and expertise on, current and emerging Indigenous, racial and oppression prevention issues.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of labour laws, human rights, collective bargaining, representation, health and safety, pensions, gender equity and other worker and union challenges.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the legislation, jurisprudence, regulations and collective agreements which regulate or have an impact on the terms and conditions of employment of PSAC members.
  • Good understanding of Canada’s economy, political climate and government structures and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the political and operational inter-relationship within a large national union organization.
  • Knowledge of labour movement emerging issues at the national and international level.
  • Knowledge and understanding of a variety of leading edge economic, social, political and labour issues.Abilities
  • Ability to think and act strategically; to critically analyze issues and situations; to evaluate and learn from experiences and situations;

to share critical thinking and analysis with others in the organization and to make sound decisions.

  • Ability to negotiate and obtain commitment and action from others via persuasion and influence.

  • Ability to facilitate arriving at cooperative and innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple issues concurrently and respond calmly and effectively to a variety of demands and projects.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as well as independently and exercise high-level judgment to all tasks.
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and discretion in preparing, disclosing and handling information of a confidential, controversial and sensitive nature.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with all levels of the organization, members and the public.

What you need to know : -Second language skills as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level indicated above.

Federal Government valid SLE results can be used toward this. Preferred candidates may have their second language skills assessed as part of the hiring process.
