The Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division (MHSE) provides oversight of the mineral exploration and mining sector during all stages of mine projects.

The division includes : the Office of the Chief Inspector; the Regulatory Management and Enforcement Branch, the Abandoned Mines Branch and the Mine Audits, Effectiveness and Digital Services Branch.

  • This position is part of the Office of Chief Inspector of Mines. The Chief Inspector is responsible for : mining compliance oversight;
  • programs required to protect the health and safety of workers and members of the public from risk factors associated with mine operations across the province;

and mine emergency incident response.

As an inspector of mines, the environmental geoscience inspector is responsible for ensuring compliance to standards and legislation related to geoscience aspects of mine site components, including mine waste characterization and handling, and the management of water quality risks to the environment.

The environmental geoscience inspector is responsible for conducting inspections, assisting in investigations and enforcement actions, and providing technical support to the mining industry, public and other government agencies.

Job Requirements :

Registered or immediately* eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (* immediate eligibility is defined as a transfer of professional membership from a recognized Canadian jurisdiction or within 6months of employment).

Note : Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional member in an applicable jurisdiction and able to transfer that current membership to a BC professional association within 6 months of employment.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.

Confirmation of registration / eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be made.

  • Bachelor's degree in geoscience, engineering or environmental sciences.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience with geochemistry, water quality modelling and mitigation for mining projects or other major industrial projects may be considered.

Preference may be given to those with :

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with mine waste geochemistry assessment, water quality predictions and modelling for mining projects and the prevention / mitigation of water quality impacts from mining projects.
  • Compliance and enforcement regulatory experience.
  • Experience with issues management, problem solving, and providing expert advice to industry clients, senior management, internal staff, and other agencies.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
