Job Summary
The mission of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services is to give court-involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youths and their families in the least restrictive, most homelike environment consistent with public safety.
This position functions as an Electronics Technician responsible for performing a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep, evaluation, testing, installation and maintenance of electronic equipment and electronically controlled systems within the facility, working on electronic systems, that have numerous subsystems which are interrelated, and are geographically dispersed throughout the region. These systems adversely affect the total operation of DYRS facilities, and the mission of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent Installs, maintains, develops modifications and ensures the reliability of the institution's electronic security, surveillance, water management, Willoughby, communications and alarm systems. Provides technical support during the preparation of drawings and specifications for electronic and communication equipment as required by work orders and etc. Conducts inspections and performs preventive maintenance as required by manufacturers' recommendations and DYRS policy.
Provides user training for staff as required. Prepares justifications for major modifications and electronic equipment replacement, as required. Reviews proposed purchases of electronic equipment to ensure compliance with established policy. Coordinates research and development of all new systems and equipment in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provides technical assistance and oversees the work of lower graded employees.
Qualifications and Education
Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
Licenses and Certifications
The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to operate a Government vehicle.
Work Conditions / Environment
Work is normally performed inside the building. However, incumbent is required to work outside in all weather conditions including snow and ice when necessary. May be required to work on ladders, scaffolds and man lifts. Work at infrequent times may be dirty and greasy. Incumbent may be subject to burns, injuries from falls or the dropping of moderate items, cuts, bruises and electrical shock.

Collective Bargaining Unit : This position is a union position covered by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2092 (AFSCME) and may require the payment of an agency service fee through direct payroll deductions.
Position Designation : The incumbent in this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel regulations, Suitability - Safety-Sensitive position.
Essential Designation : This position is designated as Essential pursuant to Chapter 12 of the Personnel Regulations, Hours of Work, Legal Holidays, and Leave.
Residency Preference : When claiming residency preference, you are required, and must agree in writing, to maintain bona fide District residency for a period of seven (7) consecutive years from the effective date of employment. You will be required to present documents (proofs) to show District residency and failure to maintain bona-fide District residency for the seven-year (7-year) period will result in forfeiture of employment.
