The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) is the national voice of Canada’s private broadcasters, representing the vast majority of Canadian private radio and television services.
CAB’s membership includes large national broadcasters as well as local and independent stations across the country, operating in multiple languages.
Canada’s private broadcasters are an integral part of Canada’s cultural landscape. They are vital to the creation and promotion of Canadian culture, employ thousands of Canadians in creative economy jobs, support the critical gathering and transmission of local and national news, and provide essential platforms for Canadian songs and programs.
They are on the forefront of sweeping changes across the global media sector, and are engaging audiences in new ways.
About the role
Reporting to the President and collaborating actively with the whole CAB team, the Manager, Communications will play a key role in building the association’s communications capacity and elevating our key messages to the public, media and CAB’s membership.
The Manager will lead in the development and execution of communications and member engagement strategies. They will support of the interests of CAB’s members through various communications and member relations activities and will actively engage with our members and relevant stakeholders to reflect the CAB’s actions and convey our key positions across a number of platforms to a variety of audiences.
The Manager will play a key contributing role and collaborate internally to help support the CAB’s advocacy and policy development activities with thoughtful approach to strategic communications and tactics.
Responsibilities
Strategic Communications
- Understands best practices in communications and member relations, including digital communications tools and social media platforms.
- Leads the development and implementation of the CAB’s communications strategy, proposing tactics to support the association’s strategic direction and advocacy goals.
- Identifies and creates opportunities to raise the CAB’s profile with key members of the media, including trade press and the Parliamentary Press Gallery, and maintains the association’s media contact lists (English and French).
- Proposes responses to media inquiries and coordinates interviews as required.
- Provides essential advice on the CAB’s public affairs campaigns to best reflect the broadcasting sector to the public and key decision makers.
- Leads the development and execution of proactive strategies to drive positive traditional media coverage, as well as further engagement via social media.
- Supports the CAB’s government relations activities by developing compelling and coherent briefing materials.
- Writes, edits and coordinates the translation of key communications materials, including web articles, news releases, and resources (e.
g., radio review advocacy piece and accessibility guidelines).
- Monitors news and social media for emerging issues and member news, identifying opportunities for engagement.
- Develop the association’s impact report based on external economic research and advocacy insights, to be published on the website biannually.
- Manages work with external providers, including graphic designers and translators, to execute the development of communications materials.
- Provides editorial guidance on and proofreads public and member-facing written materials, including submissions, member resources and speeches, to ensure accuracy and consistency in association messaging.
Digital Communications (Social Media and Web)
- Ongoing development and management of the CAB website as a hub for the association’s communications to members, media, the public and key decision makers.
- Manages the CAB’s social media channels (Twitter, ) with a focus on best practices (e.g., drafting content in both English and French) and excellent judgment.
- Drives engagement with the CAB’s social media channels by establishing a regular calendar and actively following and engaging with other relevant profiles to grow the CAB’s following.
- Designs, writes and edits social media tiles / infographics to promote the CAB’s activities, with an eye to brand identity in look and messaging.
- Sources and catalogues appropriate open-source stock photos for use in web and social media posts, the member newsletter, and other promotional materials.
Member Engagement
- Leads the CAB’s member engagement activities. This includes the development of compelling communications to reflect the value of CAB membership, and to convey ongoing activities and strategies.
- Manages the CAB’s member newsletter via MailChimp, establishing templates, ensuring key news and activities are communicated regularly (biweekly) and keeping the mailing lists up to date.
- Establishes and maintains a list of key member communications / PR contacts to source member stories and photos for promotional materials (e.
g., impact reports) and the newsletter.
Creates and distributes a yearly report on the CAB’s communications impact for the Annual General Meeting.
Other
Manages the association’s Communications inbox, including inquiries coming through the web contact form, and refers out to colleagues as necessary (e.
g., membership or other inquiries unrelated to communications).
Assists with event management as needed, including Hill Days or receptions, as well as the Annual General Meeting.
